The premiere episode of 1992 kicks off with a thunderous explosion that reverberates through the streets of Spain, shaking the very foundations. A security guard, sensing the urgency, dashes to the scene, where a towering inferno engulfs the entire edifice. Instead of summoning backup, he plunges into the blazing building and discovers his employer, Alvaro, lying lifeless within. With an unexpected stroke of luck, he rescues Amparo, the girl who miraculously still draws breath, and carries her to the precinct.
The cataclysmic event leaves our officer, 40-year-old Ricardo Zurita, alias Richi, in a state of disbelief. Richi oversees a network of vigilant security guards tasked with thwarting robberies. However, he grapples with a significant drinking problem. As for Amparo, she is none other than Ricardo's wife, though she fails to recognize him at Alvaro's funeral. Flashbacks piece together the harrowing tale, revealing that Amparo was actually outside the building when the explosion occurred. In a trance of shock, she stumbled inside to find Alvaro's lifeless body, ultimately collapsing from smoke inhalation.
With an air of suspicion hovering, it transpires that Alvaro is not the lone casualty of this tragic event. Roberto Valcarcel, a thriving entrepreneur and the helmsman of the nation's most prominent retail endeavor, also met his untimely demise in the explosion. This piece of news has sent shockwaves through the country, yet Amparo decides to confide in Richi, who once navigated the treacherous waters of homicide investigations. She harbors doubts about the police narrative, believing it to be far from the uncomplicated tale it purports to be.
A charred corpse clutching a toy unscathed from the Expo hints at a murder unrelated to the explosion. She believes the whole incident was meticulously orchestrated, with the explosion serving as a cloak to obscure evidence. This revelation sets Richi's wheels turning, and he embarks on some research, all while indulging in his nefarious habit of drowning his sorrows in alcohol once again. Given that he's summoned for a shift by his colleague, Virgil, this isn't the wisest course of action.
Realizing that there is indeed something profound embedded within this narrative, Richi embarks on a more thorough investigation. After spending an evening unraveling the mysteries with Amparo, he reaches out to Manchado, sensing that he might be onto something significant. Armed with the memory card retrieved from the crime scene camera, Richi heads to the precinct, determined to scrutinize the police report meticulously. Intriguingly, there are no traces of an accelerant, but a mysterious black stain in the office stands out like a sore thumb. Similarly perplexing, the police have no leads on the toy Curro's whereabouts.
Discouraged by this seemingly fruitless endeavor, Richi feels utterly defeated and decides to halt his investigation. With a heavy heart, he apologizes to Amparo, leaving her to navigate this treacherous path alone. Yet, what eludes their grasp is that this grim incident is merely the harbinger of a series of planned executions.
The shadowy killer, glimpsed intermittently throughout the episode, nonchalantly enters an office building, cloaked in anonymity and evading any suspicion. After donning a hazardous materials suit, he ascends to the executive suite, wielding a flamethrower with deadly intent. In the sanctity of his bath, the unsuspecting executive is incinerated, leaving a harrowing scene of carbonized remains. The killer slips away undetected, just as an escort arrives at the suite. Upon beholding the gruesome spectacle, she flees in horror.
At the crime scene, Manchado's gaze falls upon the burnt corpse in the bathtub, and in the victim's grasp, a Curro toy, eerily reminiscent of the first crime scene. This discovery prompts a call to Richi, igniting a spark that begins to connect the dots. The deceased executive is Domingo Granjero, who once collaborated with Valcarel at the 1992 Expo. A photograph of them together hints at a chilling pattern: the killer is systematically targeting each of the Expo officials, one by one.
