Spencer and Olivia arrive at their mother's house to take on the responsibility of house-sitting for Grace (played by Karimah Westbrook), who is currently enjoying a getaway in Cabo with D'Angelo (Lamon Archey). Olivia receives a message from her editor about the book she's been working on, revealing that she's been dodging their calls after missing her deadline, convinced that the manuscript was lacking something. Before Spencer and Olivia can delve deeper into this issue, Deion (Taiv Lee) arrives, seeking a place to stay. The teen claims his sister kicked him out of the house after he quit the football team. Spencer, understanding his plight, agrees to let him stay there temporarily.

Later that day, Spencer, Olivia, and Jordan pay a visit to the Baker household to meet Laura (Monet Mazur). Laura pulls out two letters from a box, one for each of the twins. She explains that Billy wrote them and they were meant to be read after they graduated college. However, she decides to give Olivia her letter early due to her struggles with finishing the book; Jordan gets his early because Laura jokingly doesn't want to hear him whine. As Spencer is about to excuse himself, Laura reveals she has something for him from Billy as well - a journal he started writing shortly after Spencer moved in with them. Spencer is hesitant to accept such a personal item, but Laura insists that Billy would want him to have it.
As Spencer starts reading Billy's journal, Billy appears, questioning whether he was out of his mind for allowing Spencer to move into his home. However, he notes that Spencer needs guidance and has immense potential. Just then, Deion interrupts Spencer's reading, announcing his intention to leave. When Spencer asks Deion where he's going, Deion becomes defensive and abrasive before departing.
Spencer continues reading the journal and Billy's words come alive again, describing teenage boys as "smelling disgusting, running around eating up things, constantly pissed off." Spencer can't help but laugh, thinking about how he was when he first moved into the Baker home. Billy then says he eventually realized the best way to reach Spencer was through Grace - a revelation that sparks an idea in Spencer's mind - to talk to Deion's sister, Tasha (Shawana Carter).
When Tasha and Spencer meet, she doesn't waste any time in addressing him directly. She blames him for her brother quitting football, but Spencer counters that Deion hated the sport. Spencer asserts that Deion quitting football is no reason for her to kick him out of the house. To Spencer's surprise, Tasha shares that this isn't what happened - a point he later brings up with Deion in a heated exchange that Olivia has to intervene to diffuse.
Before heading to bed, Spencer reads more from Billy's journal. Billy shares that Laura gave him the best advice when trying to determine how to help Spencer - that he doesn't have to figure everything out on his own. These words echo Olivia's own advice to Spencer, underscoring the importance of seeking guidance and support in times of need.
The following day, Tasha arrives at the James' residence, catching Deion off-guard. Spencer orchestrates a conversation between the siblings, revealing that Tasha learned her brother had been experiencing panic attacks during his football games. Deion, on the other hand, discovers that his sister doesn't care about his football aspirations; she yearns for him to have more than she has in life. The duo manages to sort their differences and heads home, united.
As Jordan reads his letter, Billy appears and reminds him that people will try to mold him into their own image, but he's not perfect. He encourages Jordan to uphold his own convictions and expresses his faith in Jordan. After reading his father's words, Jordan seeks advice from Mac (Jamel King) about the NFL draft. Mac advises him to focus on finishing the college season strong in the upcoming championship game, as it will enhance his prospects if he decides to enter the draft.
Later, at the beach house, Jordan watches an interview with Mac alone with Layla. The interim head coach at GAU compliments Jordan as exceptional and takes a little credit for his success on the field this year. When asked if Jordan plans to declare for the draft, Mac notes that most quarterbacks who enter the league early fail, thus it would be premature for Jordan to enter the draft now.
The next day, Jordan confronts Mac. Mac asserts it's not personal; he was merely discussing the numbers in the league. The young Baker counters that those are just the numbers Mac chose to highlight. Jordan also comments that Mac attributed his success to his work. He asserts that this is all about Mac not wanting to lose his starting quarterback for next season.
By the end of the episode, Jordan speaks with the same interviewer Mac talked to and claims he plans to finish out his college football career with Coach Kenny Boone (Mustafa Speaks). Jordan attributes Boone as the reason behind his and GAU's success.
Olivia hesitates to open her father's letter, convinced that she is not yet ready to hear from him. In a parallel moment, Spencer reminisces about the time his father passed away, and how he struggled to read his letters too. However, it was Olivia who encouraged Spencer to realize that the letters were a gift and that he was strong enough to read them. As he looks at Olivia now, who possesses the strength to read Billy's words, he sees her destiny unfolding.
Billy shares with his daughter that she is destined for great things and that he believes in her. These words eventually give her the strength to send the draft of her book to the editor.
Meanwhile, Layla meets with her new therapist, Dr. Gibbs (played by April Parker Jones), and they begin EDMR treatment, a process that uses sensory tools to help Layla confront her memories and wade through past traumas. As she begins the process, she recalls a memory of her mother being severely depressed and lying in bed, while her father desperately tries to get her up. The memory becomes so vivid that Layla becomes her mother and Jordan becomes her father. Dr. Gibbs helps Layla realize that her reluctance to marry Jordan is subconsciously due to her fear of becoming her mother and Jordan becoming her father.
Later, talking to Jordan, Layla assures him that she doesn't want to call off their engagement but needs some time to work through her feelings about her mother and her own mental health struggles. She makes a point to say that they are not her parents, as her mother didn't know how to ask for help and her father didn't know how to give it. Layla is asking for help, and Jordan is there, patient and ready to support her.
