The second episode of "Berlin ER" kicks off with Parker plunged into a harrowing nightmare, where she glimpses a figure named Nia looming outside. The eerie visions culminate in her abrupt awakening, summoned to the emergency room's urgent demands. Meanwhile, Olivia grapples with the lingering trauma stemming from her encounter with Scholtz in the previous episode.
As the team receives a call alerting them to a fresh case, Olaf displays a lackadaisical attitude, dismissing it as merely a drug addict's plight unworthy of their immediate attention. Olivia, undeterred, persuades him to fulfill his duties, and they set off. Olaf remains disgruntled, shunning the scene by lounging in his car with a meal, while Olivia ventures out to assess the situation. Sure enough, their patient turns out to be an addict, yet the responsibility to perform their duties diligently persists. They promptly convey him to the ER.
Back in the ward, Ben attends to a patient troubled by a splinter embedded in her eye. Mindful of her pressing work commitments, he swiftly removes it without resorting to surgery. However, he soon joins Parker in escorting another patient, battling Compartment Syndrome, to the operating room. Along the way, Parker abruptly detours to confront Beck.
It transpires that the Health Minister is exerting immense pressure on the hospital due to an incident in May, prior to Parker's arrival. A teacher had passed away in the ER, prompting an investigation to identify the culpable party. Beck entrusts Parker with the additional role of investigator, tasking her with uncovering the truth amidst her already overwhelming responsibilities.
This segment introduces us to other personnel within the hospital. Trixie, 32 weeks pregnant, steadfastly refuses maternity leave, acutely aware that her absence would only exacerbate her colleagues' workloads. As Parker delves into the teacher's demise, she learns that the ER was in chaos that day, handling at least 280 patients.
Ben overhears snippets of Parker's interrogation, leaving him slightly unnerved. To alleviate his stress, he engages in a brief sexual encounter with another doctor. Yet, this episode also showcases a gentler facet of the characters, as various cases facilitate their personal growth and development. The burgeoning connection between Emina and Olivia becomes increasingly evident, hinting at an impending romantic entanglement.
Emina maintains a frosty demeanor towards Parker, largely due to the fact that Parker is their fifth boss in as many months. It's patently evident that this position isn't for everyone, and Emina's frustration reaches a crescendo when she's abruptly interrupted during a crucial job interview by an urgent surgical case. Despite successfully navigating the emergency, she ultimately misses out on the interview, as the panel has already disbanded the virtual session. This sequence serves as a poignant illustration of how engrossing and demanding this role can be.
Elsewhere, Dom approaches Parker, seeking his signature on a rotation form to mark the completion of six months in the ER. However, Dom's calculation includes consulting hours, which don't meet the required criteria. Parker declines to sign, emphasizing the need for doctors like Dom in the ER.
Meanwhile, Emina's temper flares up once again while on the phone with potential employers. In a fit of rage, she ends up spraying a previously encountered junkie, who Olivia had picked up and who is now ranting about being on fire, with a fire extinguisher. To everyone's surprise, the technique actually works, and the junkie calms down instantly.
Later, Parker is confronted by the ER staff, who pull her aside for a discussion about her seemingly witch-hunt-like behavior. However, their conversation is abruptly interrupted by an emergency pager alert, signaling that the pregnant woman from earlier has gone into labor. Within three pushes, the babies are delivered.
Tragically, one of the twins needs resuscitation due to lack of breath. Despite their best efforts, the baby doesn't survive, casting a somber atmosphere over the ER. Ben retreats to the bathroom to gather his composure.
As for Parker, she resolves to implement some changes in the ER, determined to make a positive impact.
