Later, in the car, Belle confesses to being utterly captivated by Claire's abilities. Martha and Belle's astonishment deepens when they witness Belle's house engulfed in flames. Meanwhile, Anne (Barbara Flynn) discovers Humphrey (Kris Marshall) outside, diligently painting the boat, who admits to being profoundly unnerved about the morning's events. Anne gently encourages him to embrace his true self.

At the police station, Margo (Felicity Montagu) reads the horoscope to Esther (Zahra Ahmadi), while Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn) informs everyone that the Fire Service has completed its assessment, confirming the blaze originated in the garage without any trace of accelerators. Humphrey later joins Martha at a restaurant, where they discuss their to-do list and upcoming interviews. When Esther arrives, Martha praises Zoe (Melina Sinadinou) for being a lifesaver. Their conversation pivots to Belle's house fire and the psychic's involvement. Fortunately, despite the garage being gutted, the house remains standing.

Humphrey and Esther visit the scene of the fire, and upon Belle's arrival, Humphrey introduces her to Esther. As he opens the door, he notices a seemingly broken lock, hinting that someone might be keeping tabs on him. Belle reveals that someone had forcibly opened her patio doors a month ago, yet nothing was taken. Shortly after, Humphrey and Esther depart.

During their chat, Esther learns about Humphrey and Martha's interviews and ponders whether the firefighters could have broken the door. Elsewhere, Anne confides in Martha and Zoe about a persistent app user who won't cease his attempts at securing a second date, despite Anne's desire to decline politely. Zoe advises her not to respond, believing he'll eventually take the hint. She suggests trying before committing.

Back at the station, Humphrey and the team delve into the case. Esther postulates that the psychic might have collaborated with Belle, motivated by a desire for an insurance payout. Belle seeks Clarie's counsel, who admits that while spirits do show her visions, their meanings aren't always clear. Belle urges Claire to reconnect with her grandfather's spirit. Claire responds by saying he acknowledged being called her guardian angel.

Claire insists that she's presenting her with an antique automobile that might let her down, and urges caution. Meanwhile, Martha conducts an interview with Hannah Owen, portrayed by Amalia Vitale. Hannah concedes that they must ascertain the houseboat's child-safety, yet asserts that it shouldn't pose an issue. Martha shares with her how she has recently hired an assistant, emphasizing their earnest desire for this venture to succeed.

At the police station, Esther discovers that Kelby has returned with bait and instructs him to dispose of it immediately. She informs Humphrey that the firefighters hadn't broken into the garage; the side door was already ajar upon their arrival. They ponder if the perpetrator of the initial break-in might have returned. Margo performs a financial background check on Belle, revealing no indication of monetary woes. Suddenly, Belle's tire bursts, causing her to narrowly avert a crash.

Hannah interviews Humphrey, who indulges in a couple of quirky jokes before stating their lack of preference. She encourages him to unwind, emphasizing that she merely seeks to comprehend why he and Martha believe they can pull this off. He confesses to being clumsy, often forgetting crucial details while vividly recalling trivial matters. Humphrey delves deeper into his flaws, highlighting his kindness and having a father who, albeit flawed, urged him to be better. He acknowledges that Martha will shoulder the lion's share of the hard work. Following the interview, Humphrey tells Esther it went dreadfully due to his baring of all his faults.

Kelby mentions that the neighbors were unhelpful and none of those he spoke to contacted the fire brigade. Esther relates Belle's visit to Claire and her unreliable car. Humphrey finds it impressive that Claire has been accurate twice.

Humphrey and Esther pay a visit to Claire's residence, where they converse with her husband, Mike, portrayed by Kevin Bishop. He clarifies that he was the one who advised Belle to seek Claire's help. Moments later, Claire enters the room, catching Humphrey holding a healing crystal. They quiz Claire about her conversations with Belle. Claire demonstrates her practices and communicates with the spirit of an elderly woman, which Humphrey believes to be Nanny Bird. Esther remains unconvinced, prompting Claire to try and sway her opinion. Claire claims to sense a young man's presence, but Esther swiftly dismisses her, expressing disinterest.

Outside, Humphrey tells Esther that Claire was extraordinary. They then speak with Mike, who is working on a car. Humphrey notices the assortment of items in the nearby garage. Meanwhile, Martha learns that her mother is embarking on another date with a gentleman named Richard.

Martha imparts details of the interview and the subsequent steps to Anne, and as Richard Baxter (played by Peter Davison) enters the scene, he compliments Anne, asserting that her profile picture fails to do her justice. Martha is then formally introduced to him before Anne and Richard depart. Meanwhile, Kelby engages in conversation with a mechanic, their discussion weaving between Belle's car and an unexpected detour into karaoke.

At the police station, Margo reveals she has spoken with Grace Walters, a long-time acquaintance of the family. Belle's upbringing is painted in solemn hues; raised by her grandfather, she faced a tumultuous childhood with an alcoholic mother who passed away when she was just eight years old. Orphaned, Belle was destined for foster care until her grandfather, Stephen Hammond, stepped in to provide a loving home. Tragically, Stephen passed away approximately a month ago. Kelby's arrival interrupts the somber recounting, bringing news from the mechanic.

Switching scenes to a restaurant, Anne discreetly shares her date's charm with Zoe and Martha, her tone evasive when pressed about offering him coffee. Martha informs Anne that Humphrey will escort her home, as she herself has plans with Esther. In a private moment, Martha tells Humphrey that Hannah sees them as viable candidates for something unspecified. Humphrey expresses his skepticism regarding Belle and Claire, pondering if they are colluding or if Claire genuinely communicates with the deceased. Martha stands firm in her belief that Belle is honest.

Later, Martha and Esther bond over drinks, with Esther sharing stories of managing alcoholics. Martha inquires about Zoe's father, prompting Esther to reveal her journey of pregnancy, determination to keep the baby, and the ethical dilemma of informing him. Upon locating him, he offered unwavering support despite his motorcycle accident that ultimately took his life. Esther's police badge proves handy in warding off trouble as she chases away two menacing figures before steering the conversation towards Martha's potential as a foster mother.

Martha understands fostering as a mission to offer children safety and affection. Esther imparts wisdom on effective parenting. Meanwhile, Belle takes a nocturnal stroll, only to be forcefully shoved to the ground by an unseen assailant. The following day, Esther grapples with a hangover at work while Humphrey updates her on Belle's assault. They visit Belle, who, despite her inability to provide helpful information and plagued by a debilitating headache, agrees to share a list of stolen belongings and to allow them to revisit later.

Elsewhere, Kelby confesses to Margo his initiation of a neighborhood watch, prompting Margo to speculate his true motives might be linked to his attraction towards Chief Superintendent Woods.

Humphrey and Esther delve into the enigmas surrounding the incident, pondering why Belle was laden with jewelry during the assault. As Esther dials Belle's number, Humphrey tasks Margo with investigating the security cameras in the vicinity of the attack. Meanwhile, Esther reveals that Belle had paid another visit to Claire the previous night.

Humphrey's mind drifts back to a medal of sorts he had noticed on the book in Claire's home. He instructs Margo to forward an image of the medal to an auction house for appraisal. Humphrey and Esther conjecture that Belle might have mentioned her grandfather and the medal to Mike during their conversation. As a collector, Mike initially dismissed its value, only to later realize his misjudgment; the medal was, in fact, a George Cross—one that had fetched an astonishing 190,000 pounds at auction just three months prior. They surmise that Mike broke into Belle's house with the intent of stealing the medal but left empty-handed, prompting him to devise an alternative scheme.

Humphrey suspects Claire of aiding her husband in setting a trap for Belle. While Claire engaged Belle in conversation, Mike slipped away to set the stage for his sinister plan. After igniting the fire, he alerted the authorities and tampered with Belle's vehicle. Claire, aware of the precarious situation involving her father-in-law's valuables, knew Belle would endeavor to safeguard them. Mike then assailed Belle and seized the bag brimming with jewelry.

When Mike and Claire are apprehended, Claire reproaches Mike, saying she had warned him this would transpire. Belle confides in Humphrey and Esther about her grandfather's wartime endeavors and reveals her intention to donate the medal to the War Museum.

Later, Kelby informs Esther they are heading to Kitty Jay's, as Martha is taking Belle out to celebrate. Esther assures him she will join them shortly and proceeds to visit Claire in her cell, intending to ask her a question. Claire anticipates that Esther wonders if it was all a fabrication, but Claire assures her it was not. She even offers to assist Esther in communicating with Mike. Esther closes the cell flap and departs.
