Bridgerton – Season 4 Episode 6 1

Penelope approaches Lady Danbury with a desperate plea—to help her retire Lady Whistledown from publishing gossip. In her next issue, she writes that when one stands at a crossroads, they must face it head-on and embrace their destiny.

Alice keeps the truth about Benedict and Sophie hidden from Charlotte, though her stress is palpable. Meanwhile, Kate and Anthony return to England with their son, Edmund, and settle into Aubrey Hall. John is pleasantly surprised to see Francesca and Michaela's newfound friendship.

Benedict resumes managing the family's assets with renewed fervor, determined to transform "My Cottage" into their permanent home. He ignores Violet's pleas for him to end his affair with Sophie, which only adds to her worries. Marcus, noticing her distress, teases that they can remedy their situation by getting married—a suggestion that further flusters her.

Araminta persists in arranging a visit with Sophie, and Violet eventually gives in. The small talk is strained as Araminta brings up the "diamond" shoe clips Sophie had allegedly stolen. With the help of the staff, Violet concocts excuses and sends Araminta away. She writes a letter of recommendation for Sophie, promising her support but urging her to distance herself from the Bridgerton family.

Anthony arrives in Mayfair to find Violet venting about Benedict's dalliance with their maid. Alone with Anthony, Benedict insists that he knows what he's doing despite being scolded by Anthony for not thinking straight. An upset Benedict leaves the scene, leaving Anthony to ponder the complexities of love and its impact on one's decisions.

Pen struggles to pen the next issue of Whistledown, and Portia suggests exposing the identity of the new Lady Penwood. To everyone's surprise, it's Cressida Cowper, who has arrived to personally invite Pen to her first ball. She apologizes for her past bullying and proposes a partnership, claiming they can help each other by writing about Cressida's transformation in the next issue.

Meanwhile, Hazel, the new maid, notices that Sophie is in love and encourages her to embrace it. Sophie eventually gives in and indulges in Benedict's plans for a midnight picnic in the conservatory. He presents her with a sketch of their cottage, now named 'Our Cottage.' He passionately explains how society should not dictate their lives or feelings, but she fears he might break his promise to her. He doesn't understand her fear until she reveals that she is the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman and a maid. He promises to be bound to her forever, and she eventually gives in.

Charlotte receives Cressida's invitation but is still angry with her for the fake Whistledown fiasco. She wants to blacklist her, but Alice suggests a more manipulative strategy - announce the ball in her honor but never show up. The Bridgertons also gossip about Cressida and are in awe when Kate suggests that everyone deserves a second chance. They fawn over her child, and Danbury notices Benedict lurking. He confesses that he is envious of how Edmund brings joy to the family, and Danbury claims his child will do the same. He doubts it when he sees Sophie on the sidelines. It's Day 8, but Sophie hasn't bled yet, and she worries that she might be pregnant.

Pen and Eloise also gossip, but the latter feels sympathy for Cressida and Charlotte. Pen is surprised when Eloise comments that Charlotte is in a gilded cage with Whistledown as her window to the real world. Pen agrees and apologizes for not considering Charlotte's fear. She compares Lady Whistledown to a cage for the ton, just as the palace is to the Queen. But they all deserve to live without being scrutinized.

As for Eloise, she uses her newfound maturity to consider Hyacinth's feelings and ends up patching things up with her by helping her sneak into Cressida's ball as a maid. Araminta and her daughters show up and judge Cressida's garish taste. There is a throne left empty for Charlotte, and soon everyone starts gossiping as the queen doesn't show up. While the rest dance at the ball, John takes Francesca out to see the full moon. He assures her that she is perfect and will be a good mother when the time is right. They profess their love for each other and kiss under the starry night sky.

Inside, Pen shares her final issue as Lady Whistledown, leaving all the guests in shock. Cressida's humiliation is quickly forgotten, and she's grateful for the turn of events. Benedict sneaks up on Eloise and Hyacinth, who are huddled near the exit. While he teases Hyacinth, Araminta notices and thinks the "maid" is Sophie, laughing at their predicament. Posy lets it slip that Sophie isn't currently working for the Penwoods, but tries to cover up her mistake. Araminta, however, is suspicious.

Once the Bridgertons are back home, Anthony tries to reason with Benedict one last time. He points out that Benedict and Sophie's children would be outcasts, but despite this, Benedict refuses to walk away from her. Unbeknownst to the brothers, Sophie has heard everything.

The next day, we see that Pen, Danbury, and Alice have worked together to manipulate the ball so that Charlotte finally sees reason. She agrees to let Whistledown go and hopes Pen will still bring her gossip privately. Once Pen leaves, Charlotte tearfully agrees to let Danbury go as well.

At the Kilmartins', Michaela and John are having fun helping Francesca with her puzzle. He's glad that the two ladies are getting along and heads inside for a nap as he has a headache.

Meanwhile, Violet hasn't stopped thinking about the marriage joke and thinks that Marcus wants to end things. He reveals that it's the opposite, and while they will always love their late spouses, he loves her as well. Violet is overjoyed and agrees to marry him.

On the other hand, Sophie breaks things with Benedict. She's bled and not pregnant, but seeing Anthony fight for him makes her realize that she cannot take Benedict away from his family. He tears up, and she stays strong until she reaches her room, where she cries.

At the end of the episode, Francesca tries to wake John up from his nap but realizes he's dead and screams in horror.
