However, this favor comes with a price - a bracelet is placed on Edwin's wrist, binding him to the town until he can count every last cat.

Dead Boy Detectives – Season 1 Episode 2 1

The trio returns to Crystal's room, where they are introduced to Niko, a mysterious figure who repeatedly faints, accompanied by explosions of pink light. Edwin and Charles seek the advice of a magic shop owner, who, despite his appearance as a walrus, is unable to remove the bracelet. Only the cat king holds the key to Edwin's freedom. Instead, the owner offers them an enchanted jar that mimics the sounds of the ocean.

Niko's condition baffles even the doctor, leaving Edwin to delve into the supernatural realm. After a thorough investigation, they discover that Niko is harboring paranormal parasites known as Dandelion Sprites in her brain. These creatures feed on attention and adoration, manifesting as fuzzy pink lights that Crystal has witnessed. As the Sprites feed, Niko grows weaker, until she explodes like a balloon, releasing the parasites.

During their conversation, Niko reveals the heartbreaking details of her father's death and her struggles as an outsider in the US, having emigrated from Japan. She confesses that the constant stares made it difficult for her to adjust, leading her to drop out of school. Edwin, through Crystal's mediation, begins to interrogate Niko, uncovering a link to a mysterious shrine in the nearby woods where her fainting began.

Edwin and Charles embark on a perilous journey to the woods, discovering that the Dandelion Sprites are small gods who demand constant sacrifices. They can only be contained within the shrine's enchanted vessel. But fate intervenes when Charles accidentally drops the vessel, releasing its contents.

Meanwhile, in the Department of Afterlife's Lost and Found Department, the Night Nurse, the custodian of misplaced souls, prepares her case to reclaim the spirits of Edwin and Charles. Unaware of this looming threat, Edwin and Charles return from their adventure, and Crystal enlightens Niko about the reality of ghosts. Despite Edwin's objections, Niko, with her eccentric belief, accepts Crystal's revelations.

Charles suggests a novel solution - using the enchanted jar that mimics ocean sounds as a replacement for the lost vessel. They transfer the contents of the original vessel into the jar. Suddenly, Niko collapses, with the Sprites threatening her life if their demands are not met. Crystal proposes a bold idea - allowing the Sprites to inhabit her body, as she can see both the living and the dead. This way, the Sprites can have the best of both worlds and never hunger again.

Two tiny beings, adorned with large dandelion caps, emerge from Niko's mouth and make a beeline for Crystal. But Charles acts swiftly, trapping them inside the jar. The Sprites let out a stream of profanities, but they are powerless to escape. Case closed.

Following her near-death experience, Niko's hair turns a striking white, and she gains the ability to see ghosts. Amazingly, she decides to keep the dangerous Sprites as...pets. The jar is occasionally rattled by angry sprite curses, but Crystal quiets them with an old sweater. This case catapults the Dead Boy Detectives and their new medium, Crystal, into the limelight, solving mysteries and attracting a long line of ghosts seeking their help.

Meanwhile, Esther is busy with her own plans. She transforms her familiar, the crow Monty, into a handsome teenage boy, preparing for a revenge that is sure to shake the world of the Dead Boy Detectives.
