The third episode of "Dexter: Original Sin" kicks off with the sensational news breaking across the media: Judge Powell's son, Jimmy, has been abducted. Dexter's bloodlust is ignited, but Harry is deeply concerned that this case could unravel old, painful childhood traumas buried within him. The personnel at the Police Department scramble to pinpoint the perpetrator, but given Judge Powell's status, the list of potential enemies harboring grudges is lengthy and daunting. Without a ransom note or substantial evidence, they find themselves plunged into an impenetrable darkness.
The following morning, Detective Maria LaGuerta storms into the precinct, a formidable force intent on restoring the department's tarnished image, following a series of negative headlines in the Miami Herald. The Captain, less than thrilled about her arrival, assigns Harry the task of keeping a watchful eye on her.
While Harry keeps Maria under surveillance, Dexter embarks on a reconnaissance mission targeting Ferrer, devising a plan to eliminate him. He breaks into Ferrer's house and rummages through his belongings, where he discovers a notebook meticulously detailing all the killings Ferrer has orchestrated. Each entry, a grim testament to his victims, is marked as "payments paid in full."
Amidst the unfolding saga, a twist arises that spices up the narrative back at home. Dex is left utterly astounded when he catches a glimpse of Deb's chum, Sofia, adorned with the nurse's distinctive earrings. Consequently, he brokers a pact with Deb – in return for procuring cocaine for her weekend bash, he'll reclaim those earrings.
When Harry discovers that Dexter has taken a keepsake from the Nurse, shock etches across his face, and he promptly scolds his son outdoors. Harry insists that Dexter dispose of the earrings, stressing how perilous they are. Meanwhile, Dexter gears up to confront Ferrer, armed with a fake ID bearing the name "Patrick Bateman."
With little effort, he gains entry and receives $500 from Ferrer as a loan repayment. He then uses the money to buy Sofia a new pair of earrings. Jen, enthusiastic about her brother and best friend's budding closeness, is all for the idea. However, Dexter's thoughts wander elsewhere.
Dexter decides to cook his own batch of coke for her, employing pills and household items to simulate the real deal. Afterward, he deliberately drops some money at a sleazy bar, hoping to deceive Ferrer into believing he's a wretch who can't pay up. Yet, the true stratagem lies in luring Ferrer to pull the trigger.
Dexter inspects the bullet, which finds its resting place inside a tree trunk. It's an exact replica of the one used in the Carballo incident. Harry cautions Dexter, emphasizing the peril and insisting that he must involve Harry before embarking on any investigative missions. But he eventually succumbs to Dexter's urges, and his son asserts that this is just his nature, reassuring him that he "has this" under control.
In bygone days, our gaze was frequently drawn to the bond between Laura and Harry, as Laura, working incognito, began her ascent through the hierarchical ladder. Under Harry's mentorship, she blossomed into a figure of significant influence. Yet, despite Harry's vigilant watch, Laura inadvertently stepped into a perilous snare. In swift pursuit, Harry and his companion gave chase, but Laura demonstrated remarkable composure within Diego's luxurious limousine. She secured a crucial meeting with Zenny and, venturing solo, more than held her ground against him. However, Zenny's social maladroitness also extended towards Laura, who desired deeper ties but recognized the boundaries, respecting them despite her longing.
Deb's party proceeded amidst revelry, where the females indulged in cocaine, while Dexter, unknowingly entangled in a romantic subplot, found himself kissed by Sofia as she departed. Dexter, socially awkward as ever, was mentally elsewhere, his thoughts distant. Meanwhile, Dexter confronted Ferrer, culminating in Ferrer's demise and a macabre disposal in Alligator Alley, while Harry struggled to maintain focus on his duties.
As the episode drew to a close, it seemed that Deb and Dexter had rekindled their rapport, yet the duration of this reconciliation remained uncertain.
