Episode 5 of "Dope Thief" kicks off with a glimpse into the past, depicting Bart being roughly handled by the police, while Raymond, from the confines of a police car's rear seat, can only watch helplessly. Finding no incriminating evidence, the officers eventually let them be. Bart, with a grotesque wound slicing through the side of his head, reinforces to his son that this brutal treatment by the police is simply a part of life – they knock you down and keep you there. Ironically, it transpires that Ray had been holding the drugs for his father the entire time.
In the present day, six weeks have passed since the robbery. Manny is now attending meetings at the local church, steadfastly committed to following the path to sobriety, while Ray remains deeply skeptical, a sentiment understandable given his troubled past with the police and Bart's hardened life lessons.
The discussion of redemption and seeking forgiveness leads Ray to pull out a newspaper clipping, confirming that Rick had killed DEA Agent Jack. Spread across eight different articles, it's evident that Jack was a highly decorated agent. This revelation complicates Ray and Manny's efforts to evade the authorities even further.
Mina continues her relentless pursuit of the truth, heading to Jack's residence to confront his wife. The air is thick with tension, hinting at an affair that once existed between them. Yet, Mina doesn't flinch from this reality nor is she there to apologize. Instead, she seeks to rummage through Jack's belongings. To her surprise, she uncovers burner phones, a stash of cash, and a photograph of herself.
Armed with one of the burner phones, Mina dials an unknown contact, asserting her authorization to conduct this search. This authorization is backed by a code printed on the phone's backside.
Mina eventually meets with this contact's representative, or perhaps just a subordinate, in a downtown bar. The intention is to establish a rapport and uncover what truly transpired at Jack's house. It transpires that Jack was a double agent, providing these individuals with answers in exchange for covering his numerous debts.
Jack, a notorious chatterbox, had regaled this individual with tales of Mina, for he was the one who initially brokered their deal and served as their intermediary. However, it transpired that Jack had merely been toying with her, exploiting her to attain his own ends. This informed acquaintance was also aware of Ray Driscoll and proposed that they forge an alliance, pooling their efforts to neutralize Ray. Despite her threats, it was evident that he held a wealth of knowledge, confidently asserting that he was "far ahead of her" in this intricate game.
Theresa, weary of the mundane confines of the motel, attempted to depart, but her exit was thwarted by Raymond's return. He revealed footage captured at their residence, showing a mysterious figure depositing a package on their doorstep. Convinced it was a bomb, he hastily returned to stake out the premises, intent on verifying his suspicions. However, his fears were unfounded; the package contained nothing more sinister than a neighborly gesture—a fruit cake left as a gesture of goodwill.
Later, Raymond received a call from his son, who imparted grim tidings about the cartel, the missing funds, and the illicit substances. The young man further warned of impending doom, reciting a series of numbers and a cryptic sequence that Raymond swiftly decoded to read, "Remain silent." Heeding the warning, Raymond kept his counsel, uttering not a word.
Ray ventures over to see Michelle next, and she offers him comfort, her tender touch caressing his hand and arm. This gentle interaction blossoms into a passionate kiss, leading them to share an intimate moment in bed.
Ray confides in Michelle about the scam and the unforeseen injury it caused, which she seems to comprehend deeply. Later, Ray and Manny journey to Lancaster County to pay their respects to the fallen. There, they find themselves surrounded by the Amish, who question their affiliation with the bikers. After reassuring them of their innocence, the Amish open up. It transpires that a few of their community members were enticed into the bikers' ranks by an English courier who had promised them a way out.
These revelations corroborate the narrative that the pandemic fueled this surge in criminal activity, with the two Amish men revealing that the bikers needed places to hide their contraband – including the barns. The mysterious courier never returned, and the money found bore distinctive markings, eerily similar to the note in Mina's possession.
That fateful night, as Ray stands outside, a shadowy figure emerges and fires at him. Just as the assailant prepares to deliver the final blow, Bart steps in, his ankle monitor gleaming under the moonlight. On parole but still dangerous, Bart shoots the would-be killer and drags the lifeless body into the garage, his son watching in horror.
