Season 1, Episode 1 of "Millie Black" begins with Millie's haunting narration, revealing her deep-seated turmoil caused by a spectral presence. She transports us to her youth, where she and her brother, Orville, shared a home with their mother, following the abandonment by their father. Their mother's discovery of Orville's homosexuality led to relentless beatings, until one fateful day, Millie intervened, prompting her mother to exile her to London to live with relatives. A solitary phone call later informed her of Orville's demise, leaving her with a lingering guilt and a sense of betrayal.
However, upon her mother's passing, Millie was astounded to uncover the truth: Orville was still alive. Abandoning her life in London, she returned to Jamaica, where she joined the local police force and formed a crime-solving duo with Curtis, focusing predominantly on cases involving children. During their commute to work, Millie unburdens her worries about Orville, now renamed Hibiscus, who resides in the Gully. Millie eagerly wants Hibiscus to move back into their newly restored childhood home, but Hibiscus hesitates, haunted by the specter of their mother.
At the station, their supervisor assigns them a fresh case and directs them to an anxious nun, Sister Agatha. She expresses concern over Janet, a model student who has been missing for two weeks. Janet's indifferent mother suggests she might be working as a prostitute, dismissive of her whereabouts. In stark contrast, Sister Agatha had once witnessed a car pick up Janet, an unusual act for the disciplined student.
The detectives track down Janet's mother, who is unhelpful and dismissive. Inside Janet's room, they find a business card from a trendy club, Hot Pinky. Heading to the club, Millie receives a startling message: Hibiscus has been arrested. She hastily visits the police station to secure her release, concerned by the bruises and her involvement in prostitution. Millie brings Hibiscus to the club and confronts the manager, who remains tight-lipped. However, a helpful stripper reveals that Janet has been seen with the landlord.
In this revised version, the narrative has been enriched with vivid descriptions and emotional depth, enhancing the scene's impact and readability.
Meanwhile, Hibiscus slips out unnoticed and makes her way back to the Gully. The individual in question is Freddie Sommerville, the sole heir to the wealthiest family in Jamaica. Freddie's infamous reputation as a pedophile precedes him, yet his parents' vast fortune allows him to evade justice every time.
The two detectives steer their way to the Sommerville mansion, where they find the family immersed in revelry. However, Freddie is conspicuously absent. Freddie’s father, unimpressed by the interrogation, threatens to summon the police chief and summarily ejects the detective. Unbeknownst to him, Millie manages to slip into the kitchen and engages in conversation with the housemaid. The housemaid divulges that Janet might have been expecting, hinting at her sighting of Janet toting a bag emblazoned with the logo of an upscale baby boutique.
At the Hot Pinky Club, Corsica, another figure, enters in search of Freddie. The manager repeats the same tale she shared with the authorities. After Corsica departs, the manager tasks one of her men with tailing him, harboring the hope that Freddie might be entangled in some misfortune, to their advantage.
As the day draws to a close, Millie wraps up her duties and reconvenes with Hibiscus for dinner. Regrettably, Hibiscus remains resistant to the idea of relocating to their childhood home or abandoning her street life. The discourse takes a contentious turn, culminating in Hibiscus storming out. In a bid to alleviate her stress, Millie ends up inviting the bartender back to her abode for a sexual encounter.
The following morning, Curtis collects Millie, and they resume their investigation. The detectives visit the boutique and uncover evidence of Janet's presence there, accompanied by Freddie. Intriguingly, she purchased attire for a child of considerable size, primarily suited for an 8 to 10-year-old. While at the boutique, they receive a radio dispatch announcing a shooting incident on one of Sommerville's properties. They haste to the crime scene, greeted by a hapless detective who insists that Freddie was fatally wounded in a botched robbery.
As Millie scrutinizes the crime scene, she seizes one of the letters and delves deeper, uncovering a positive pregnancy test discarded in the trash. Despite the victim's brutally battered face, Millie deduces that this person is not Freddie. She contends that the victim was an intruder whom Freddie had overpowered. As she constructs her theory, the police chief arrives, accompanied by Superintendent Luke Holborn of Scotland Yard. Millie is anything but pleased to find her case entangling into a more intricate web.
She confronts the police chief, demanding to know the reason for Superintendent Holborn's presence. She suspects that Freddie might be a crucial witness to something significant and is currently a fugitive police witness. The police chief remains noncommittal to Millie's hypotheses. Instead, he urges Millie to locate Janet before it's too late.
Later, Millie engages in conversation with Luke and realizes that he holds no concern for Janet. His sole focus is on Freddie, a revelation that escalates the peril for Janet.
That very night, Hibiscus and her fellow sisters from the Gully are assaulted on their way back from a gig. The homophobic attack results in the tragic death of one of them.
As the day draws to a close, Millie receives a call from the bar manager, informing her that Freddie might be hiding in the Hills. They investigate and discover that Freddie's mother owns a house there. They request backup but, as the reinforcement is delayed, they decide to breach the house themselves. Inside, they find Janet but no trace of Freddie. As they attempt to persuade Janet to leave with them, Freddie's hitmen arrive on the scene. A fierce gun battle erupts, and Curtis is hit.
