The premiere of Season 4 of "Ghosts" kicks off with a haunting flashback to 1962, where a stern woman named Patience is ostracized from her Puritan community for her unyielding severity. She advocated for the execution of a five-year-old girl accused of witchcraft, merely for conversing with a doll. Swearing an oath, she vows to become the most ruthless and flawless Puritan the world has ever seen.
Transitioning to the aftermath of the season-three cliffhanger, Isaac abruptly terminates his wedding vows to Nigel following Pete's unexpected return. The spectral inhabitants of the house debate the aborted nuptials, while Sam and Jay engage in a conversation about their restaurant plans with Mark. They subsequently embark on a quest to seek Isaac's opinion on the restaurant's flooring tiles.
In the climactic scene of the previous season, Isaac was mysteriously dragged into the earth by the newly introduced ghost, Patience, aided by the basement spirits. Within that subterranean realm, Patience accuses Isaac, Thorfin, and Sasappis of abandoning her. Isaac, with his usual persuasiveness, convinces Patience that the trio had been frantically searching for her when she disappeared. Trusting Isaac, she swiftly forgives him.
Meanwhile, back at the house, Isaac has vanished, prompting Sam, Jay, and the other ghosts to launch a desperate search for him. Nigel, heartbroken and rejected by Isaac, broods in solitude in the library. Eventually, Nancy, one of the ghosts, who had been acting strangely, reveals that Patience has abducted Isaac. Demonstrating how Isaac was ensnared by the earth, Patience also kidnaps Sasappis, leveraging Isaac's longing for his missing friends and desire to reunite with them.
Desperate for guidance, everyone turns to Flower to uncover the location of the mysterious dirt pit. Flower reveals it to be beneath a willow tree, but it later transpires that this was merely the lyrics of a song, leading to Jay becoming the unfortunate victim of Flower's erratic memory after hours of fruitless digging.
Inside the subterranean cavern of dirt, Isaac pledges to become a better person upon escaping its confines, contingent upon "God fulfilling His part of the bargain." Isaac and Sasappis, in a moment of levity, mock Patience's incessant repetition of her name. Overhearing their taunt, she is deeply wounded and decides to withdraw into solitude, subsequently returning Isaac and Sasappis to their worried friends.
Later on, Isaac resolves to rectify his mistake, orchestrating an extraordinary scene where the ethereal spirits form a human chain, united in their efforts to extricate Patience from the clutches of the earth. With heartfelt remorse, Isaac and Sasappis offer their sincere apologies to Patience for leaving her behind in her hour of need. The episode concludes on a tender note, as Patience spends the night with Alberta, showering her with inquisitive questions, her curiosity boundless.
