In the fourth episode of Good Omens season 2, titled "Chapter 4: The Hitchhiker," the story unfolds with Aziraphale picking up a hitchhiker who turns out to be Shax. She questions why Crowley is risking his neck to hide Gabriel for Aziraphale, noting that Aziraphale isn't exactly Crowley's type. However, she recalls a rumor from the past that they were romantically involved. She had dismissed it then, especially since following up on the rumor led to Furfur, a demon, being demoted for failing to bring evidence.

Good Omens – Season 2 Episode 4 1

Aziraphale tries to deny his identity, but Shax catches him when he thanks him for revealing Gabriel's location in a bookshop. Aziraphale denies ever mentioning it, but his response gave away the fact that her guess was correct.

The episode cuts to London in 1941, where Crowley demonically intervenes and a bomb explodes in the church where he and Aziraphale are meeting with three Nazi spies. The spies don't die immediately and overhear Aziraphale thanking Crowley for his help. The demon even offers him a ride back to town as he has some work at a theatre.

In Hell, Furfur is tired of processing the newly killed. Shax comes up with a proposition: she can help him get promoted to the Temptations Department if he alerts her to any angel-demon collaborations.

Back at work, Furfur is busy processing the newly-killed Nazis - Greta, Glozier, and Harmony. They grumble that the bomb was never meant for the church but for East-End London. Harmony blames Crowley, and Furfur's ears perk up when they state that someone called Aziraphale and Crowley worked together to cause a demonic intervention in a church.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Henderson of the Camelot Theatre is furious to see that the whiskey Crowley was smuggling for her has been smashed due to the bomb. She's fed up with the constant problems and doesn't even have a magician anymore. Aziraphale offers his services as a magician to thank Crowley for his help in the church.

In Hell, Furfur comes up with a deal - the three Nazis can either rot in Hell forever like their commander or go back to Earth as zombies. All they need to do is find evidence of Aziraphale and Crowley's romance and alert him through a ring. He will arrive with a camera to capture the evidence. Since Furfur has a miracle blocker, the duo won't be able to perform any miracles and get away. The only catch is that the Nazis need to eat human brains or they will get super hungry. The trio agrees and ends up on Earth. After feasting on a scavenger at the church, they head to the pub opposite the bookshop to spy on the duo.

Inside, a skeptical Crowley contrasts starkly with Aziraphale's ecstatic demeanor as the latter boasts of his studies under a renowned magician and even performing for the illustrious Queen Nefertiti. Crowley humorously engages him and requests a practice trick. At the pub, Harmony tries to lipread Aziraphale's babbling, which sounds like a nonsensical medley of banana, fish, gorilla, shoelace, and nutmeg, much to the annoyance of his companions.

Crowley questions Aziraphale's trick of replacing a farthing with a penny and decides to help by taking him to a magic shop. The three zombies follow them, with Glozier disguising himself with props and entering the shop. The owner and Crowley are concerned for Aziraphale, who keeps fumbling with the props while declaring his intention to perform at the prestigious West-End theatre.

Aziraphale's heart is set on a magic rifle and bullet when he suddenly spots it. The owner does his best to deter him, explaining that he needs a trusted confidante who will shoot the rifle at him and a license. The angel simply looks at Crowley and is reassured when he is told that he has the right man. With Aziraphale now possessing a license and even a gun, the owner has no choice but to sell the rifle.

Meanwhile, in the back, Glozier is busy playing with the props. When the zombies outside signal him to alert Furfur, he ends up twisting a prop ring which squirts ink. The duo leaves, and the zombies decide to feast on the owner before heading to the theatre.

As showtime approaches, Aziraphale suddenly feels nervous. The zombies are finally able to contact Furfur, who activates the miracle blocker, which will last for 30 minutes. Aziraphale attempts a warm-up magic trick but fails, even prompting Crowley to nervously consult the manual. Mrs. Henderson urges them to get on with the main trick and hands Crowley the rifle.

The trick involves Crowley shooting a bullet past Aziraphale's ear while the angel reveals a second hidden bullet in his mouth, claiming that he caught the bullet that was shot with his mouth. Of course, that's when Crowley reveals that he has never shot a gun. The two start sweating and shaking, even making the audience nervous for them.

FURFUR snaps a photo of the two and relishes in the impending show, knowing full well that if Crowley fails, they'll be unable to clean up the mess that would reveal the angel's true face. But, amidst the tension, Crowley fires, the bullet zipping past AZIRAPHALE, who then triumphantly reveals the bullet hidden in his mouth. The crowd erupts in wild cheers.

As the duo celebrates backstage, FURFUR arrives to gloat, only to be met with disappointment when Crowley doesn't remember him. However, the plan is still a go as FURFUR shows them the photo of AZIRAPHALE handing a rifle to Crowley. A nervous AZIRAPHALE hands the photo back to FURFUR, but Crowley remains unfazed.

FURFR, being the cunning demon he is, points out the loophole in his deal with the zombies and declares that they never mentioned anything about becoming living human beings. The zombies, nonetheless, consider it a win and depart. So does FURFR as he hands the envelope containing the photo to Hell's council. They open it to find a pamphlet of the Camelot show instead of the expected photo. It turns out that AZIRAPHALE pulled off one last magic trick by replacing the photo with the pamphlet, which involves saying the words 'banana, fish, gorilla, shoelace with a dash of nutmeg'.

They toast together, with AZIRAPHALE commenting that he knew Crowley would come through. The demon simply replies that it's because AZIRAPHALE asked him to trust him. AZIRAPHALE points out that he isn't as evil as he portrays himself to be. The demon not only accepts it but also says that while Heaven sees things in black and white, he prefers to blur the edges. They toast to shades of grey.

In the present, SHAX informs BEELZEBUB that she knows GABRIEL is in the bookshop. The senior demon simply acknowledges it, but SHAX pushes further, asking for permission to lead an army. BEELZEBUB points out that they cannot enter unless invited, but SHAX tells her not to worry. Pumped up, BEELZEBUB agrees to give her an army.

AZIRAPHALE returns to London and spots NINA still having a tiff with LINDSAY. He hasn't found any new information yet, but Crowley is confident that he will. He updates him that his rain and kiss plan didn't work, so now it's AZIRAPHALE's turn. He has just the right setting in mind – the monthly meeting of the shopkeeper and traders association, where the angel plans to host it.
