Mid-Century Modern – Season 1 Episode 3 1

Once Jerry and Arthur depart, Sybil (Linda Lavin) breaks the news to Bunny that Hurricane Mindy has just made landfall, suggesting they take refuge in the basement. Unperturbed, Bunny explains that Mindy is going through a tumultuous phase and has invited her to stay. He implores Sybil to refrain from nitpicking, emphasizing that this will be their first reunion since Ethan left Mindy. Bunny's plea for understanding is echoed in his earnest request not to criticize his sister.

Just then, Mindy arrives, clutching the package she inadvertently ran over in the driveway. Elsewhere, Jerry and Denise Buckley (Cheri Oteri) work diligently to ensure a passenger boards the plane smoothly. Arthur, less than enthused, discovers his seat is in basic economy, despite Jerry's earlier reminder that an upgrade was unlikely. Seated beside a chatty woman, Arthur finds himself in for an earful.

Mindy, exploring Jerry's refrigerator, stumbles upon his milk products. Meanwhile, Arthur's neighbor, Becca Frank (Billie Lourd), reveals her father is a flight attendant, though she herself is a nervous flyer. Recognizing who he's speaking to, Arthur hastily excuses himself. Sybil, unable to resist, begins criticizing Mindy's hair, prompting Bunny to defuse the tension with an offer of wine. Upon his return, he finds himself interrupting a heated exchange. Bunny persuades Mindy to accompany him to the Bunny Hutch, hoping to change the atmosphere.

Arthur confides in Jerry that his daughter, Becca, is on the same flight, urging Jerry to reach out to her. Jerry, however, cites his previous unreturned calls from Fire Island and years of unacknowledged letters and gifts as reasons not to. He respects Becca's mother's wishes for him to stay away, believing it's for the best. Jerry asks Arthur to relay every detail of their conversation later.

Inside the Bunny Hutch, Bunny gives Mindy a tour, sharing the store's significance to their family. Their conversation drifts to their parents, with Mindy noting that the one who adored her is no longer alive. Bunny attempts to convince Mindy that Sybil's love runs deep, to which Mindy concedes Bunny's success with the business but wishes she had been consulted about it.

Elsewhere, Becca informs Arthur that she never received any of the items her father sent. Although he called a few weeks ago, her mother advised against returning the call. Arthur approaches Jerry to reveal that his ex-wife never passed along any of the gifts or letters Jerry sent.

She imparted to Becca her desire for him to no longer be a part of her life. Jerry, convinced that his ex had squashed any hope of him fostering a relationship with his daughter, began to freak out and, in his agitation, inadvertently consumed tap water aboard the airplane. Arthur seized the moment, urging Jerry that this was his opportunity to unveil the truth to Becca. Yet, Arthur ended up stepping in for Jerry, enabling him to converse with Jerry while he was occupied.

Becca acknowledged receiving his message and intended to call him back shortly. She recounted how her mother had been a pillar of support throughout her journey. She then pleaded with Jerry to extend her some leniency, inquiring why it had taken him so long to reach out. Jerry, uncertain of how to articulate his thoughts at the moment, confessed that he had thought of her daily.

Suddenly, the airplane encountered turbulence, prompting Jerry to guide Becca through the ordeal calmly. Afterwards, Arthur expressed his bewilderment over Jerry's decision not to confide in Becca. Jerry responded that he didn't want her to feel betrayed by her mother.

Meanwhile, Bunny and Mindy returned home to find Sybil waiting for them with a solemn expression, instructing them to sit down as she had something important to say. Sybil confessed that she had been lost and directionless following the demise of their father. She acknowledged that Bunny had thrown her a lifeline, allowing her to find a renewed sense of purpose. However, she realized that Mindy needed to navigate this journey on her own. Bunny then posed the question to Mindy: whether she was interested in running the store. Sybil revealed that she had only worked there for three afternoons. Grateful for their support, Mindy thanked them both warmly.
