Episode 4 of Monsieur Spade kicks off with a haunting flashback to the waning days of 1945, when the Second World War was drawing to a close. In the aftermath of conflict, those who had opposed their nations were grappling with uncertainty about their futures. Jacques, Gabrielle's unfaithful husband, was among them. He met her in Bozouls, ready to flee to Argentina, unaware of the fate that awaited him.
Gabrielle drew a gun and fired, ending Jacques's life. Others, whose loved ones Jacques had betrayed, followed suit, their anger and vengeance spilling over. Patrice and Maurice were among the crowd, silent witnesses to the gruesome scene. Jacques's body tumbled off the cliff, with Phillipe and Audrey looking on, seemingly approving of this brutal display of justice.
Back in the present, Henri came to Spade's rescue, intervening in a kitchen confrontation. He struck the assailant choking Spade with his gun and shot another in the shoulder. Spade regained his composure and ushered the women upstairs with Henri. He bound the assailant, revealed to be an agent of the SDECE, French army intelligence.
The true purpose of the attempted kidnapping was to retaliate against Philippe. He had been tasked with guarding Zahid, the Mahdi, but instead, he had chosen a different path. Spade made it clear to the SDECE agent that he was an ally in the search for Philippe. However, kidnapping Teresa was a misstep in their attempt to get back at him.
The agent revealed that Philippe had been part of a clandestine spy unit, hunting down members of the Armee Secrete (OAS), a far-right organization opposed to President de Gaulle's decision to cede Algeria. Philippe was a skilled marksman, responsible for the deaths of over 30 OAS members. The agent swore he knew no more, and as a gesture of truce, Spade freed him, warning him never to send armed men to his house or near Teresa again.
The scene shifted to Marguerite, who was preparing to meet the mysterious man represented by Chastain. This man was Denis, Jean-Pierre's father, who had sent him to war out of his own desire for Marguerite. She greeted him with a vapid, disinterested manner, making it clear that she wanted nothing to do with him. Denis, claiming to be suffering from a terminal illness, pleaded with her, but Marguerite remained unmoved.
Despite numerous attempts to seek forgiveness, Marguerite dismisses Jean's pleadings, fixating instead on a bundle of letters. Denis offers them to her, hinting at their profound significance in Jean's life. With a bitter farewell, she departs, leaving Denis behind.
Meanwhile, the other intruder at Gabrielle's abode is discovered lifeless in the pool. Patrice arrives on the scene and deduces that the victim was shot from behind, the bullet piercing his skull. Evidently, another presence hovered over the property that fateful night, one with deadly intentions.
Sameer's wife pleads with him to dispose of Zahid, a looming presence in their lives since the Imam's visit. Their every move is being watched by a vigilant SDECE agent, lurking across the street.
Jean-Pierre, increasingly disillusioned with the horrors of war, visits a blind comrade from his military days. His friend recounts a chilling tale of war's brutality, leaving Jean-Pierre deeply unsettled. Meanwhile, Samir listens to his wife's pleas and brings Zahid back to the club, where Jean-Pierre's interest in him piques.
Spade sees through Henri's ruse, realizing that he has been planted at the house by his superior in Paris. Before Henri departs, Teresa engages him in conversation, seeking insights into Philippe and the OAS. But Henri remains guarded, offering only vague answers. She steals a kiss from him under the guise of snatching his wallet, unaware that he remains oblivious to her true intentions.
Later, Teresa visits Audrey to return the clothes she had sent. Memories of her first encounter with Spade at the house flood back, recalling Audrey's initial coldness. But now, with a substantial inheritance looming, Audrey's attitude has warmed considerably. Before bidding farewell, Teresa declares her intention to meet Philippe, who has been informed by Jean-Pierre of his possession of Zahid.
Over lunch with George and his mother Cynthia, Spade and Patrice become increasingly suspicious of the pair. Spade notices an antenna perched atop their garage, a puzzling detail given the lack of space for a car within.
The significance of the letters is revealed in a tense exchange between Jean and Marguerite. They were written by Jean during his enlistment in the Algerian war, a testament to his deep feelings for her. Marguerite attempted to leverage Denis's position to aid Jean, but her efforts were futile. Denis stole the letters, hoping to drive a wedge between them, as he had long harbored feelings for Marguerite.
The episode concludes with Jean-Pierre handing Zahid over to Philippe, who swiftly dispatches the man guarding the house. Philippe reveals that the slain individual was a Saudi agent, not an SDECE operative.
