Monsieur Spade – Season 1 Episode 3

Published: May 31 2024

Episode 3 of Monsieur Spade kicks off with a haunting flashback to 1955, when Spade first set foot in Bozouls. Seated across from Phillipe in the club that now bears his name, the two engage in a tense conversation about Gabrielle's desperate wish for Phillipe to flee the city. We are privy to the fact that Spade had been blackmailing her, leveraging Jacques' sordid affairs during the war. However, the spy remains unmoved by her pleas, his intentions remaining a mystery. Philippe, undeterred, stands firm, and Spade's threats fail to intimidate him. Later revelations show that Philippe had indeed left Bozouls, armed with the funds Gabrielle had offered him.

In the present, the club's worker, Sameer, escorts Zahid back to his abode, where a gathering of family and friends await. Amidst the confusion, they promptly summon the Imam for guidance. The Imam, however, quickly sheds light on the boy's identity and his significance to the community. Zahid, meanwhile, persists in scribbling mysterious patterns of numbers, seemingly attempting to communicate with the others, but the meaning remains elusive.

Marguerite finds herself constantly harassed by a man named Chastain throughout the episode. He persists in his requests for her to meet his mysterious employer, whose identity remains shrouded in mystery, though hints suggest it could be her father. Chastain confides in her that he is dying and wishes to see her one last time. Reluctantly, she agrees to his entreaty.

Jean-Pierre, in a separate plotline, steals jewels bestowed upon Marguerite by her aunt, with the intention of using them to finance a legal challenge against Spade's claim to the vineyard. He first exchanges them for cash with a military acquaintance and then orchestrates a legal dispute that threatens to shake Spade's hold on the property.

Spade, meanwhile, is haunted by flashbacks of tender moments shared with Gabrielle. Despite appearances that might suggest a marriage of convenience, these memories reveal a deep bond of warmth and affection between them. This contrasts starkly with Jean-Pierre's accusations and his newfound zeal in pursuing the legal case.

Elsewhere, Spade, Patrice, and Maurice make their way to the Bishop's office, summoned to discuss the perplexing case involving the Monk. While they attend to this matter, at home, George and her mother hang a newly painted portrait of the lush landscape, a peaceful scene that provides a stark contrast to the drama unfolding elsewhere.

Contrary to the trio's expectations, Monsignor Clement, the Vice Chancellor, equivalent to the Vice President of the Diocese, gracefully greeted them. Accompanying him was Father Morgan, an American monk, who sat solemnly in the meeting. They were informed that the murderous monk had been apprehended inside the hallowed Rhodes Cathedral. However, to Patrice's dismay, the monk was destined to face trial in Rome, bypassing French legal procedures. The church claimed the right to judge him due to his religious vows. Patrice was angered but had no recourse but to withdraw.

Outside the doors, Morgan caught up with the trio and disclosed that the monk's name was Friar Angelo. He had been dispatched to Bozouls by Agnes Omnipotence, a mysterious secret society. Spade anticipated he would inquire about the missing boy, but Morgan remained silent. This confirmation in his mind solidified his suspicion that the Americans were also searching for the boy.

To arrange a meeting with Philippe, Spade cleverly arranged for Dr. Simon Pochoul to visit Audrey's house under the pretext of a routine checkup. While there, Simon casually mentioned the news of Teresa being shot. As expected, Spade received a call from Philippe later that day, inviting him to meet at the cemetery at 9. But as Spade waited, Philippe failed to appear. It dawned on the retired detective that this might be a ruse to lure Teresa out of the house. He hurriedly returned to check on her.

Relieved to find her sleeping peacefully in the bed, Spade shared a drink with Helena. Suddenly, a loud thud echoed from the kitchen. Two masked individuals neutralized Spade and abducted Teresa. Meanwhile, George and Cynthia, who had been eavesdropping through a bug planted in the painting, heard everything. Realizing the urgency of the situation, George drew his gun and prepared to intervene, but Cynthia stopped him, reminding them of their mandate to "observe" only.
