The first episode of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" kicks off with a captivating scene. Both spring to their feet, hurriedly gathering cash and firearms from various corners of the house. But fate has other plans. Not long after, a bullet tears through the air, striking John, the man, in the face. Despite the shock, the woman strides boldly towards the car, firing shots, but she too falls victim to the hail of bullets.
The scene shifts to an intriguing interview setup. A young woman faces a robotic interviewer, answering typical job questions with ease. She reveals a failed attempt at joining the CIA, attributed to her antisocial tendencies. After her, a man strides in, equally confident in his responses. He boasts of basic military training and a tally of 13 kills, one of which was accidental. He confesses to having said "I love you" only twice, to his mother and two women, while the woman remains tight-lipped on the subject.
The two interviewees, now introduced as Jane and John, converge in a mysterious house. Their first encounter is in the elevator, where they exchange pleasantries. Their initial mission, revealed on a laptop through a chatbot similar to the interviewer, is startling: they must pose as a married couple and tail a woman to a restaurant, ultimately intercepting a mysterious package. Despite initial awkwardness, they retire to their respective rooms, each lost in their thoughts.
After a dinner filled with tense silence, John ventures to Jane's room to bid her goodnight. He snaps a photo of her, posed next to a plant, ostensibly to check its watering status. In reality, he's attempting to scour the internet for clues about her identity, but to no avail.
The following day, the pair sets their sights on the restaurant, eyes peeled for their target. When she emerges, they tail her closely, tasked with retrieving an unknown package. John probes Jane about her willingness to engage in high-risk missions, and she confesses that she had signed up for them, as he had. He confesses his disappointment with the mundanity of their first assignment.
As they shadow the woman, John attempts to breach Jane's defenses, but she remains guarded, refusing to reveal her true name. He, in turn, lies, claiming innocence from any killings. The woman they're following suddenly rises and exits, prompting the agents to trail her outside. She meets a young man, and the pair watches, intrigue and suspicion brewing within them. John persists in his efforts to get to know Jane, and she reluctantly shares tidbits about dishwashing and garbage. Their target hands over some money to the young man, and they share a passionate kiss, leaving the agents more perplexed than ever.
The woman embarked on another journey, and this time, John and Jane trailed her to a vibrant movie theatre. Standing just outside, they exchanged contact numbers and slipped on their earpieces, preparing for their next move. As John cleverly created a commotion, Jane slipped unnoticed into the cinema.
Inside, the woman sat engrossed in the play, unaware of the drama unfolding around her. Meanwhile, John and Jane communicated through text, with Jane responding promptly. Suddenly, the woman rose from her seat and exited the theatre. John's eyes followed her, noting that she had retrieved a brown box from the coat check.
They followed the woman to a bustling mall, where she purchased a new phone and made a call. Jane's instincts urged her to seize the box, but John shrewdly navigated through the shops, searching for a box that resembled the one the woman carried. Once she left the mall, John handed the identical box to Jane.
John again created a commotion, and in the midst of the confusion, Jane collided with the woman, dropping both boxes. Swiftly, Jane picked up the wrong box and fled, leaving the woman perplexed.
As they rode the train back home, John and Jane were elated by their success. They confessed that they knew little about the mysterious company they worked for and admitted that they had taken the job because no one else would hire them.
Flashbacks to their interview revealed a startling agreement: they had consented to a legally binding marriage and severed ties with their respective families. Arriving at their destination, a luxurious house in an affluent neighborhood, they were summoned to the kitchen. There, a woman in an elegant dress received the package from them. She unwrapped it to reveal a stunning cake, leaving John and Jane completely baffled.
Confused and bewildered, they bid farewell and left the house. Just as they pondered the reason for retrieving a cake, a deafening explosion rocked the house behind them. Panic-stricken, they sprinted through narrow alleyways and scaled a wire fence, eventually finding refuge in a nearby restaurant. John escaped through a window while Jane made a dash for the front door, each taking separate routes home.
Finally reunited in their sanctuary, they collapsed in exhaustion. John mused about naming their cat and realized with a start that it was Jane who had brought Max to him. Then, he confessed a lie from their café encounter: he had actually been involved in drone combat in Afghanistan. Jane, in turn, admitted that during their earlier pancake adventure, she had been terrified the entire time. As the episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith drew to a close, they bid each other a peaceful goodnight, their bond strengthened by their shared experiences.
