Published: Jun 05 2024

Episode 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith opens with Jane waking up, her mind racing as she searches for Max. She finds him calmly seated beside John, lost in the depths of meditation. Seizing the opportunity, Jane surreptitiously rummages through his belongings, only to be caught red-handed. She feigns innocence, but the moment is tense.

As Jane steps out to fetch breakfast, John, curious, delves into her personal items. Upon her return, a neighbor accuses her cat of wrecking his plants and defiling his backyard. Jane vehemently denies owning a cat, but the neighbor persists with probing questions about her and John. She casually replies that they are both software engineers, a neutral facade to hide their true identities.

Inside, John, who has been eavesdropping, reveals that he has been observing the house, wondering if their employers intend for them to become a real-life couple. Jane firmly disagrees, insisting on keeping work and pleasure separate. They strike a pact: to collaborate until they reach a financial milestone, and then part ways. Absolutely no romance involved.

After breakfast, the duo receives their next assignment from the automated machine, Hihi. Their objective: attend a silent auction, identify the highest bidder for a Warhol masterpiece, and administer a dose of truth serum. No casualties, no witnesses. They dress to perfection and arrive at the glittering event. At the last moment, John decides to infiltrate as catering staff, rather than as a guest, adding an element of surprise to their mission.

Inside the bustling auction hall, John mingles, discreetly noting the bidding amounts for the Warhol. His eagle eyes land on a man bidding a staggering 106 million. A quick investigation reveals his identity: Eric Shane, a powerful real estate mogul. The pair must devise a plan to get him alone.

Jane notices Shane's apparent fondness for the catering staff. She approaches him with a flirtatious smile, suggesting they retire to a more private setting, accompanied by a catering boy "for whatever they desire." The ploy works, and Shane eagerly agrees. He encourages Jane and John to role-play as dogs, even demanding a kiss.

As Shane joins in the game, John and Jane, having miscommunicated, both inject him with the truth serum. The double dosage has a devastating effect, leaving Shane deliriously candid. He stumbles out into the main hall, spilling his secrets to all who will listen. The pair, stunned by their unexpected success, quickly make their escape, leaving the auction in chaos.

Just as Warhol's victorious bid is declared, Shane begins to unwrap the secrets of numerous influential individuals, revealing their darkest deeds. Suddenly, Shane exhibits a severe reaction to the serum, causing Jane and John to frantically usher him out and into a waiting car. With urgency, Jane pilots them back to their abode, where they frantically search for an EpiPen amidst the chaos. But it's too late; Shane succumbs to the effects of the serum, and his life slips away.

Now, they're faced with a daunting task—disposing of Shane's lifeless body. They drag him to their bathtub, their hearts heavy with guilt, and break his bones to fit him into their garden composter. The aftermath leaves both Jane and John feeling hollow and remorseful.

Unable to shake the nightmarish events, Jane finds herself unable to sleep. She descends the stairs to find John engrossed in a cartoon show, a rare moment of levity in their otherwise tense situation. They engage in idle conversation, and John realizes that Jane had set up the cannibal porn as a prank, a feeble attempt to lighten the mood.

After more jesting, Jane asks if he wants to kiss her, and he nods, his eyes locking with her. Their lips meet, and they give in to their desires, finding a fleeting moment of comfort and solace in each other's arms.

Meanwhile, a message from Hihi arrives, breaking the tense silence. The mission has failed. They now have only two more failures remaining before the end of Mr. & Mrs. Smith Episode 2, and the stakes have never been higher.
