On Call – Season 1 Episode 7 1

Just as the tension begins to ease, Diaz and Harmon are summoned for a new emergency. A weed shop, which Harmon swiftly recognizes as belonging to Smokey, has been robbed. Three masked men made off with the cash, and amidst the crossfire between the perpetrators and the responding officers, a young boy was hit by a stray bullet. Harmon interviews the injured boy's friend, who reveals that the robbers knew the exact location of the safe, hinting at an inside job.

Barely have they begun to untangle this web of intrigue when another call comes in, reporting another robbery nearby, once again involving three masked men. Harmon and Diaz race to the scene, where they find Leona, Smokey's daughter, crawling out of her house, injured and frightened. She informs them that the thieves have fled, and inside, Diaz discovers a gaping hole in the wall—the entire safe has been stolen. A photograph confirms that this is indeed Smokey's residence.

Harmon conferences with Lasman, updating him on her conversation with Smokey and revealing that his superiors are furious with him for failing to protect Maniac. She suspects that this spree of robberies is an inside operation orchestrated within East Barrio. Meanwhile, Diaz attempts to converse with Leona, but she remains tight-lipped, offering no further insights.

Smokey arrives on the scene, his rage unleashed. Lasman delivers the heartbreaking news that the young boy wounded outside Smokey's weed shop has succumbed to his injuries. However, Smokey refuses to cooperate, dug in his heels. Arrest warrants were executed for all documented East Barrio members. Despite Harmon's dissent, it was clear that there was nothing she could do about it because the duty commander had approved the action.

The police forces have converged, and Lasman issues a stark directive, instructing them to reign in the unruly elements "just as they once did." He expresses his desire to witness the detention cells filled to capacity by nightfall. Harmon endeavors to engage Lieutenant Bishop in rational discourse, but she curtly offers her the alternative of stepping aside. Before Harmon can utter a word in response, Diaz affirmatively declares their readiness to embark on their duty.

Later, as they ride in the car, Harmon queries Diaz about his prompt consent. It becomes evident that Diaz harbors a deep-seated vendetta against East Barrio for the plight of his brother. Harmon emphasizes the need to manage the situation prudently and inquiries if Diaz believes he can persuade Leona to divulge further details. He confidently assures her of his capability, and they proceed to the hospital.

In the hospital room, Diaz informs Leona that Smokey is in grave peril and presses her for the names of the perpetrators. She queries what will happen if they return, to which Diaz extends his card, pledging his unwavering support. Leona reveals a single name - Edgar Torres.

The duo speeds to Torres' residence and discovers the door ajar. Inside, they find a man lifeless in the living room. Further in, they encounter Edgar Torres, barely clinging to life. He expires before he can utter the assailant's name, but Harmon and Diaz are already convinced it was Smokey.

As detectives take charge of the crime scene, Harmon and Diaz traverse the streets of Long Beach, witnessing officers rounding up East Barrio members, even adolescents. Diaz realizes the flawed nature of the operation. Returning to the station, Harmon confronts Lasman, accusing him of betraying the public's trust. Lasman, however, is steadfast in his belief that this is the sole path to restoring order.

Detective Sergeant Koyama enters the scene and presents Harmon with a proposition. He subtly reveals the existence of an informant within East Barrio, willing to assist them in conclusively bringing Smokey to justice. Harmon, intrigued, expresses her willingness to proceed, thus concluding Episode 7 of On Call.
