As for Jose Arcadio, he dies a mysterious death when Rebeca shoots him out of the blue. According to the narrator, no one ever found out why Rebeca killed her husband.

Aureliano steadfastly declines to engage in negotiations or yield, prompting Moncada to vow to safeguard Macondo diligently. True to his word, Moncada fulfills his pledge, enlisting Ursula in the rejuvenation of the town. Under his astute guidance, Macondo basks in tranquility for a decade.
