Orphan Black: Echoes – Episode 2 Season 1

Published: Jul 09 2024

Episode 2 of Orphan Black: Echoes kicks off with the young Jules frantically dialing 911 and her adoptive mother, Neva Lee. Lucy, convinced of Jules' involvement in the cloning project, abducts her in a desperate bid for escape. Their destination: Craig's abode, where an unexpected resident turns out to be a bitter ex that Lucy left behind. Craig, while advocating for Jules, concedes that there might be a grain of truth in her clone claims. However, Jules remains tight-lipped, revealing only that a car accident killed her parents and erased her memories - a convenient twist. With her grandfather ill, she's been taken in by the Lees.

Lucy attempts to convince Jules of her cloning theories, pointing to their matching wrist scars. But when she searches for the Additive imprint on Jules' arm, she finds nothing. Meanwhile, Cosima dispatches Felix to check on Kira, who's distraught over whether she's somehow responsible for Lucy's actions. The uncle-nephew duo catch up, revealing that Felix has flourished as an artist while Kira has drifted apart from Sara's charity work. Her son, Lucas, is a high school dropout and a devout Quaker. Felix tries to ease Kira's tension with a night out at a club.

Elsewhere, Tom and his trusted accomplice, Emily, visit Dr. Darros' nature sanctuary. The eccentric yet wealthy doctor is obsessed with saving endangered turtles, and he's determined to find Jules, even if it means eliminating Lucy. However, he keeps Kira in the dark about Jules' abduction.

Back at Craig's, Jules fakes a trip to the bathroom and hides. Outside, a calmer Lucy tries to bond over their shared memory loss, but Jules, instinctive and cunning, dismantles a pipe, lulls Lucy into a false sense of security, and stabs her before fleeing.

Jack and his daughter, Charlie, return, having sought refuge at Tina's, a fellow soldier who knows Jack well and took Charlie in when her mother, Clara, abandoned her during Jack's tour. Charlie remains shaken, but Jack tries to soothe her. Their reunion is interrupted by a bleeding and sheepish Lucy, explaining that she can't risk a hospital visit. Jack patches her up, and she reunites with Charlie.

At the club, Kira struggles to relax, constantly reaching out to a Josh. She finally confides in Felix that she's printing neurons, but they fail to communicate post-transplantation. She believes cocaine might amplify the signal, but she must keep it a secret to safeguard her funding. Felix easily procures some cocaine for her, but his attempt to reach Lucas to check on Kira falls flat.

Jules trudges her way home, a chill in her heart towards her stepfather, James, who stubbornly believes she fled from school. She confides in her adopted brother, Wes, but their focus remains on Lucy, the so-called "kidnapper with a twist." A tense standoff brews between James and Lucy, as Neva, who had been adamant about adopting her, returns. As they argue, Jules listens, her heart heavy. She flips through photos taken before the car crash, finding them reassuring until she notices the doll by her side, pristine as it was in a photo of her as a toddler.

At Tina's, Jack is infuriated to learn that Lucy is leaving again, now armed with Neva's address. He demands an explanation, threatening to walk away forever. Relenting, Lucy takes him to the abandoned lab where she was created. As she reveals her truth, Jack, initially in disbelief, eventually embraces her in understanding.

Back at Additive, Felix gently prompts Kira to share her troubles. It transpires that her project aims to aid those in need of transplants, but they haven't ventured into full-body transplants publicly, like Lucy, who may have been a human trial. Guilt-ridden over the possibility of having flawed Lucy, Kira fears she's a terrible, selfish person. Her anguish deepens when her cocaine experiment fails.

Neva checks on Jules, sensing her loss. The stepmother assures Jules that she doesn't need to know her past to appreciate her beauty. But their moment is cut short by a security alert, mistakenly assuming Jules has entered Neva's office.

In reality, it was Lucy, who was accidentally scanned at Neva's office and identified as Jules Lee due to their identical DNA. She sneaks in, discovering a family photo taken in front of Beacon Bayview. It also reveals that Neva works for Currentsy, a Darros company subsidiary. As Lucy returns to Jack, Tom informs Darros of Jules' return and Lucy's whereabouts.

Jules decides to video call her grandfather, who claims the scar on her wrist is from a bicycle fall. Though reassured, after the call, we see the grandfather is an actor hired by Additive, leaving the set with Jules' bodyguard, leaving Jules' fate hanging in the balance.
