Episode 3 of Outlander Season 8 begins with Fanny and Brianna visiting the trading post. Two plainclothes officers hit on Fanny, but she puts them in their place with her sharp wit. The women also notice the officers meeting with Cunningham.

John writes a letter to Claire, requesting Bree to paint a portrait of Amaranthus and Trevor, who are still living with him in Savannah. Jamie is still jealous and he argues with Claire over it. She reminds him that John is intertwined with William, which further annoys Jamie. Fanny overhears this and is scared that she will be turned away if Jamie is angry with William, since he is looking after her as a favor. Claire quickly assures Fanny that they’ll take care of her no matter what.
Meanwhile, William tells John about the grave mishap, but the latter just thinks that Ben is in another grave. He doesn’t believe William’s conspiracy that Ben is alive but decides to indulge him. He wants William to attend a luncheon with him. This way, William reenters society while also meeting with one of the guests, Ben’s commander, General Leslie.
Elsewhere, Jamie questions Cunningham about the pervy officers. In his usual placating manner, Cunningham apologizes and claims that they simply came to return his dead son’s pistol.
While getting ready for the luncheon, Amaranthus walks in on William changing. She gives him a fancy waistcoat that she had embroidered with beetles and silk thread for Ben. William learns that she is a commoner with her father being a naturalist. They share a moment as he tries on the waistcoat and both are flustered.
That night, Roger and Bree discuss their plan of using John’s invite to enter Savannah and buying weapons to protect the Ridge. The fact that John is indirectly helping them upsets Jamie. He storms off and Claire wonders why he can’t move on. He confesses that he is scared that she will think of John when she is with him. She promises she won’t and decides to prove it. They sleep together and she seems to have convinced him.
The following morning, he discovers her engrossed in Frank's tome, teasing her about her recent thoughts of her past spouses. They ponder the motive behind Frank's writing: is it to inflict pain upon Claire by reliving Jamie's fate? Yet, what troubles her the most is the ambiguity of Jamie's demise depicted in the book—whether it's factual or not. As she departs, 'Frank' assures Jamie that he knows the truth: it's real.
At the luncheon, William questions General Leslie, who offers no answers but inadvertently reveals that John was the governor of Ardsmuir prison in Scotland 25 years ago, shocking William.
Throughout the meal, Percy—John's former lover and the one who warned him of Richardson's trap for William—sits with John. He enjoys teasing John but has a task for him: finding a Claudel Fraser (Fergus) in exchange for his assistance in locating Richardson, who has gone missing.
On the Ridge, Claire finds herself occupied with the Whitakers, a free Black family traveling by. Susannah Whitaker, the mother, is pregnant with twins, but her husband is hesitant to accept Claire's help until Jamie promises to protect them.
After the luncheon, William presents Amaranthus with Ben's uniform. Initially reluctant, she keeps it for her son Trevor's sake. As she stores it away, William notices the toy soldier he had given Ben. Amaranthus explains that Ben had given it to her for Trevor. William is clearly saddened, and she suggests taking a walk. He thanks her for the waistcoat and asks her to explain the embroidery. She flirts with him and ultimately kisses him, surprising him.
Returning to the challenging pregnancy, one twin thrived while the other remained stillborn. Claire and Jamie mourned for Faith as Claire valiantly attempted to save the infant girl. She clutched the lifeless baby close, recalling Master Raymond's words that she possessed a bluish aura. As she held the stillborn child, her heart raced, and she was enveloped in a bluish glow—and the baby miraculously came to life.
After everyone had departed, Jamie pointed out that the baby had been dead. Confused, Claire searched for an explanation. She recalled Master Raymond bestowing a blue aura upon her during her own near-death experience after delivering Faith. She felt the same way with the Whitaker baby and wondered if she and Raymond possessed some form of healing power. She also realized that Raymond couldn't return Faith to them since he'd been banished from France. Jamie didn't witness any blue light, but when Claire removed her bandana, he noticed that the front of her hair had suddenly turned stark white.
The next day, Jamie reassured Fanny that the Ridge would always be their home by constructing a cairn (stone memorial) for Jane. They were interrupted by Cleveland killing two officers who were smuggling weapons. He took the weapons and threatened to hang the officers, but Jamie intervened. Jamie also discovered a coded letter on one of the officers. He burst into the emporium and picked up the pistol left behind by the officers. It contained the codex, through which he learned that Cunningham had been tasked with recruiting new members.
Cunningham didn't deny it and even revealed that he was still serving the Crown. They were forming a Loyalist militia consisting of loyal Southerners who had settled with the Crown's permission. Cunningham even tried to recruit Jamie, reasoning that they both wanted to end the war. And the quickest way to keep the Ridge, granted by the Crown, was for the King to win. As Jamie left, "Frank" reminded him that each day brought him closer to King's Mountain.
