Platonic – Season 1 Episode 4

Published: Jun 21 2024

Episode 4 of Platonic kicks off on a promising note for Will's plans. He finds himself escorted home by the charming Peyton, a young girl who seems to have everything going her way. The pair are poised to engage in an intimate encounter, the air filled with promise and anticipation.

However, their moment is rudely interrupted by Peyton's roommate, Maddison. She unexpectedly barges in, drawn by the allure of the final episode of Succession. Maddison's untimely arrival distracts Peyton, drawing her attention away from Will. He senses the fleeting moment has passed and gracefully exits, leaving a trail of unfinished desires in his wake.

As Will scrolls through Instagram, he stumbles upon posts from Audrey, announcing her upcoming move in with her Norwegian boyfriend. Meanwhile, Sylvia and Katie embark on a journey to their friend Christine's unconventional "divorce party." Instead of mourning the end of a marriage, Christine and her friends choose to celebrate Christine's newly found independence.

Platonic – Season 1 Episode 4 1

Before the festivities begin, Sylvia discreetly whispers her prepared speech to Katie, a simple yet profound message that often escapes people when put on the spot. Katie is soon called upon to speak, and she confidently delivers Sylvia's lines. Her delivery is smooth until she mentions how miserable her mother was after her divorce, a revealing slip that momentarily dims the mood.

Later, Stewart and Charlie discuss Sylvia's embarrassing "speech-eating" incident from the previous episode. They agree that Sylvia needs to redirect her energy into finding employment. Charlie has already arranged a job interview for Sylvia with his friend Kirk. Stewart cautions Charlie to approach the subject with ease and casualness, advice that Charlie struggles to follow but promises to try. As it turns out, Stewart's advice is spot-on, and Sylvia is not receptive to Charlie's unexpected push to get her back on the job market.

The following day, Sylvia found herself constantly glancing at the cards, her anxiety brewing with each passing moment. She shuddered with the thought of dialing Kirk's number and opted instead to seek comfort in Will's presence, hoping to find a semblance of stability. However, Will himself appeared to be a shambles, and he was even more stunned by Audrey's pettiness in posting the announcement on social media, knowing he would see it. Despite their differences, Sylvia decided to throw him a divorce party, akin to the one Christine had organized, and Will reluctantly agreed.

As she prepared to leave for the party, Charlie once again nudged her to make the call, only fueling her defensiveness. That evening, a serene and elegant dinner celebration was arranged in honor of Will. Sylvia was the sole female presence at the table, surrounded by Will's closest friends and fraternity brothers, including Audrey's stepbrother, Andy, an investor in the bar.

The atmosphere quickly shifted as Reggie and his compatriots began to dominate the conversation, eventually convincing everyone to venture out to a strip club. Sylvia observed the stark contrast in how Will interacted with his friends and how he behaved with her and her social circle. She firmly opposed the idea of visiting such a place, but Will insisted on her accompaniment, yearning for the wild escapades they once shared. Sylvia expressed her disdain for such clubs, hinting that she had moved past such indulgences.

Will, however, seemed to be stuck in his teenage years, eagerly trying to persuade her with animated gestures. He eventually abandoned the strip club idea and proposed a more illicit alternative: cocaine. Little did they know that Reggie had actually procured both cocaine and ketamine, the latter being a dangerous "rave drug." Sylvia's panic escalated as the effects of the drug began to take hold, leaving her in a strange, calm, and detached state.

Later, the group embarked on a grocery shopping trip, where the full impact of the Special K became apparent. Sylvia's behavior became increasingly erratic, flailing around the supermarket floor, disrupting the grocery items, and ultimately being escorted out by the store owner for causing a commotion.

Will escorted her back to his house, where she eventually woke up, groggy and disoriented, two hours later. He apologized profusely for disrupting her settled adult life. Sylvia attempted to ease his insecurities by mentioning the job interview Charlie had arranged for her.

Inspired by the wild night's events, Sylvia decided to finally call Kirk, unaware that it was already 2 am. Her panic escalated when Kirk's angry callbacks began pouring in, and she chose to ignore them. Meanwhile, Will continued his pursuit of Peyton, who seemed increasingly receptive to his advances. Sylvia returned home around 4 am, finding Charlie awake, checking the time with a worried sigh.
