Platonic – Season 1 Episode 3

Published: Jun 21 2024

In this episode, while the Grieves are enjoying their idyllic getaway at Charlie's Partner's Retreat, Will faces a formidable challenge in his own backyard. Sylvia's hopes for a blissfully relaxing staycation are swiftly dashed. Her troubles begin when Charlie's boss, Frank Schaeffer, deliberately snubs her by failing to remember her name, yet recalling the name of a waitress he met three years ago in Ohio. This leaves Sylvia feeling like an outsider among the newly minted partners, wondering if this could have been her path if she hadn't chosen a different life. Deep down, she senses that this is where she truly belongs.

Her misfortunes multiply when they run into Vanessa, an old college friend who has recently been made a partner and, to Sylvia's further irritation, has just given birth to her fourth child. Meanwhile, Will, the dedicated brewmaster, carries on with his duties with utmost professionalism, aided by Omar, who listens attentively throughout the morning. Reggie, the majority owner of Lucky Penny, informs them that he has met with the CEO of Johnny 66, a national burger chain, who is interested in licensing their beer.

Will outright rejects the idea, but as a minority shareholder, he must defer to Andy's decision, despite the potential for generational wealth. As a committed entrepreneur, he fears that associating his brand with a fascist could tarnish its image. Charlie tries to console Sylvia, suggesting that Vanessa is probably jealous of the freedoms Sylvia enjoys at home, but Sylvia still feels overshadowed.

No matter where she goes, the "partner chatter" seems to follow her, and she eventually succumbs to the urge to seek solace with Will. Unbeknownst to him, she leads him to a Johnny 66 outlet. Although initially reluctant to enter, Will's resolve begins to waver. He doesn't want to acknowledge that the founder, Johnny Rev, has built a beloved and successful franchise, but he recognizes that there are lessons he could learn from it.

As Will exclaimed, "Who in their right mind would purchase this merchandise?" yet he himself ended up purchasing it, thus embodying the triumphant tale of Johnny. He candidly revealed his reluctance to become a corporate sellout, stressing that his coolness contrasted sharply with the image of Johnny 66. Meanwhile, Sylvia accompanied Will back to the bar, offering to mediate with Reggie as his legal representative.

Andy speculated that the entire debacle stemmed from Will's pending divorce. Given that Reggie, Audrey's stepbrother, had received the offer, Will seemed reluctant to accept it. In a fit of frustration, Will stormed into the backroom and attempted to empty all the beer kegs, leaving nothing to serve. The situation spiraled out of control, leading to a heated altercation with Andy. Will's demeanor remained agitated and abrasive.

Later, the two men stumbled to the hotel, where Will had indulged in a few too many drinks. There, they encountered Charlie and Stewart, a new partner and Sylvia's former colleague. Sylvia, too, had begun to show the effects of the alcohol, losing her wits when Frank mistakenly assumed she was a waitress. She angrily snatched the speech Frank was meant to deliver at the conference and demanded he recall her name before she would return it. He failed, and she promptly consumed his speech.

Charlie confronted Sylvia about the incident, and she remained fixated on why Charlie hadn't informed her of Vanessa's promotion to partner at the firm. Their discussion delved into Sylvia's insecurities about encountering her former colleagues. Charlie assured her that she could rejoin the legal profession if she desired.

While Sylvia and Charlie listened to Frank's disastrous speech, Will stumbled upon a story Audrey had posted about her boyfriend. Enraged, he forcibly broke down a door and printed an Employee Withholding Certificate. He then made a beeline for the bar, where he reconciled with Andy, having gained a new perspective on the Johnny 66 deal. Frank's speech proved to be a debacle, as expected, and he finally managed to recall Sylvia's name. However, Sylvia wasn't quite sure if that was a blessing or a curse.
