Pro Bono – K-drama Episode 6 1

As the case unfolds, Myeong-hun seeks to annul the marriage due to fraud and duress. Kaya's testimony reveals that she was kidnapped and raped at the age of 13, a fact she allegedly concealed from Dong-min to ensure the marriage proceeded. Myeong-hun argues that this crucial information about her childbirth history is vital for the future of their union, casting a somber mood over the proceedings.

However, Kaya and Gi-ppeum are touched by Da-wit's bravery in fighting for justice. Fortunately, the judge rules in Kaya's favor and grants her a divorce. To celebrate, Da-wit takes Gi-ppeum out and confronts her about the bribery accusation. Through Jung-in's revelation of his 70% win rate deal, Gi-ppeum struggles to believe in his goodness while feeling he is making it difficult for her, which upsets him further.

Their relief is short-lived as Myeong-hun appeals the verdict with new evidence. Flashbacks reveal Kaya's harrowing escape from her rapist after a week. She returns home only to be forced by her father to return to her abuser, who had hit and sexually abused her every night for nine months. In despair, she flees again during her labor, giving birth in the woods with the rapist's family taking the child and severing all ties with her.

Despite this harrowing background, Kaya became pregnant during her time with the rapist, and since her father had given his consent, it is legally not considered sexual assault. This means there was no harm to her reputation or privacy in hiding her pregnancy history from Dong-min. The judge reverses the initial ruling, and instead of granting a divorce, she annuls the marriage.

The Pro Bono team's hearts were heavy, their focus unwavering on the appeal. Simultaneously, news reports teased the upcoming United Nations General Assembly on World Refugee Day, where the South Korean President would deliver a speech on their embrace of human rights and welcome to refugees. Meanwhile, the villagers of Yangchon petitioned for clemency, ultimately securing Governor Cho's release from prison with his sentence reduced to community service and sexual rehabilitation. As he left the court, a smirk played on his face towards Kaya. On top of that, Kaya's final divorce appeal was dismissed within hours by none other than Chief Justice Shin, Da-wit's former boss. Da-wit was overwhelmed and confused but managed to pull through by filing for a refugee status to prevent Kaya's deportation. Her application was instantly denied, and she teetered on the brink of being sent away. However, Da-wit bought time by requesting a public hearing, calling out the country for protecting assailants and punishing victims. The Pro Bono team was worried, but his strategy worked. The case went viral days before the UN speech. During the next hearing, a flood of human rights attorneys joined as co-counsel, bringing with them migrant victims who had been let down by the system. Along with those present, countless migrant workers online demanded asylum in South Korea. Da-wit pleaded with the patriotic judge to overlook nationalities and acknowledge the migrants' contribution to the country. The judge was initially conflicted but ultimately accepted that in a just nation, someone like Kaya deserved justice as well. He reversed her refugee status denial, and even Dong-min was overjoyed for her. As expected, the case continued to go viral during the World Refugee Day speech, making things awkward for the President. The Ministry of Justice quietly made an offer - a work visa and financial support for Kaya in exchange for dropping the case. This had been Da-wit's plan all along, and he accepted it without hesitation. Next, the greedy Governor Cho appealed his verdict further, not wanting to do community service. But the judge he faced was the grim reaper, Gi-ppeum's friend, who was infamous for his harsh sentences against sexual abusers. Kaya's news even reached Chairman Oh, who enjoyed his power and refused to step down. Instead, he ordered Jung-in to disband the Pro Bono team. At the end of the episode, the team received their medical check-up results. Gi-ppeum recalled Da-wit's anesthesia statement and the drunk bribery video. She realized something and suddenly declared his innocence with a renewed sense of conviction.
