Reacher – Season 2 Episode 1 1

Meanwhile, in the tranquil town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, Jack Reacher stands in a thrift store, nonchalantly handing over his worn clothes to the shop assistant. He instructs her to clean and sell them, intent on purchasing a fresh ensemble. The assistant mentions the price tag of $20, but Reacher, pointing to a discounted sign, argues for the reduced rate of $11. She explains the oversight, and he promptly offers to withdraw the balance from an ATM across the street.

At the ATM, Reacher patiently queues behind a distraught woman, her face bruised and battered. He notices a minivan parked across the street, sensing a looming danger. Without hesitation, he whispers to the woman, "Remain calm, I'm here to help. You've been carjacked, haven't you?" She nods, revealing that her child is trapped in the vehicle, while the assailant holds a gun.

"This will be swift," Reacher assures her. He strides towards the vehicle, smashing the window with his jacket as a shield against the shattering glass. With swift and precise moves, he overpowers the assailant, slamming his head between the car doors and disarming him. The relieved mother is reunited with her son, and Reacher instructs her to alert the authorities and hand over the confiscated bullets. She inquiries about his identity, but he disappears into the crowd, leaving her with a fleeting "I prefer to remain anonymous."

Studying the ATM receipt, Reacher notices a subtle code, a distress signal from his former colleague, Frances Neagley. She was once a member of the esteemed 110th MP Special Investigations Unit, led by none other than Reacher himself. Her urgent message informs him of the tragic death of Calvin Franz, a cherished team member. Without hesitation, he informs her, "I'll be in touch once I land." He exits the thrift store, leaving behind a bewildered assistant and a trail of mystery.

A flashback transports us to the serene environs of Rock Creek, Virginia, several years prior. Reacher, in his army uniform, stands tall and resolute. Calvin Franz approaches, curious about Reacher's presence. The latter explains that he had witnessed Franz's impeccable handling of a conflict between two individuals and deemed him worthy of joining his elite team.

Reacher and Franz stepped into a dilapidated room, serving as the humble headquarters of the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. The unit members were gathered, engaging in lively banter and casual games. Among the familiar faces were Frances Neagley and David O'Donnell. Acknowledging the shabby condition of their surroundings, Reacher urged everyone to spring into action and restore order to the room.

In the present, Williamsburg, New York, Reacher walked into a cozy coffee shop to reunite with Neagley, who had anticipated his arrival. She had prepared a steaming hot beverage and a meal, having tracked his flight. As a private investigator, she presented Reacher with files detailing Franz's murder. Franz had vanished from his home a week prior, and his widow, Angela, had alerted Neagley to the tragic incident. It transpired that Franz had a son, and had been brutally tortured before being flung from a helicopter. Neagley sought Reacher's guidance, having failed to reach out to their team members. Reacher insisted they handle the case themselves, unwilling to involve the police in their friend's death, and proposed visiting Franz's widow.

Exiting the coffee shop, Reacher's keen eye caught a suspicious black Sudanese car parked nearby. A bald man with a notepad was observed spying on them from the vehicle. Another ominous figure, Trevor Saropian, sat in another car, keeping tabs on the pair. He made a call, informing someone that "She just met up with the big one," referring to Reacher. Neagley and Reacher attempted to contact David O'Donnell from their car, leaving a voicemail asking for a callback.

At Franz's widow's home, Mikey, their son, was engrossed in a television program. His mother gently urged him to occupy himself with drawing in the kitchen. Reacher probed her for details about the events leading to Franz's death. Franz, a private investigator, had been away on a job, and his wife had returned home to find their abode ransacked. They inquired if she knew of any specific cases he had been working on, but she revealed that he never discussed his work at home. She suggested that there might be clues in his office, and handed the keys to Reacher. Mikey chimed in with a surprising statement: "You do not mess with the special investigators." Neagley questioned if his father had taught him that, while Reacher noticed the black Sudanese car parked outside.

Saropian emerged from a hotel, engaged in a phone conversation with Shane Langston. Langston inquired if the hotel manager had spoken, but Saropian assured him that he had paid off the concierge, who had revealed that Neagley had checked in under the alias of Sarah Connor and requested adjacent rooms. Saropian pressed Langston on the identity of Sarah Connor, but Langston dismissed the question with a shrug, unaware that the reference was a humorous nod to the iconic Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where he portrayed the relentless T-1000 hunting down Sarah Connor. Langston instructed Saropian to keep a watchful eye on the hotel and on Reacher and Neagley.

Reacher and Neagley arrived at Franz's Three Rivers office, only to find it in shambles. However, Reacher surmised it was merely an outburst of frustration, as their search had come up empty. Among the wreckage, he stumbled upon a photograph of the entire 110th unit. Neagley pressed Reacher for the keychain, arguing that Franz, being as shrewd as he was, must have kept his most precious items in a safe deposit box. Her gaze fell upon the United States Post Office across the street, and she noticed Franz's mailbox key dangling from the chain. Impressed, Reacher complimented Neagley's sharp wit.

They stood outside the post office, but it was past 5 p.m., and the doors were closed. They decided to return the following day.

Back at the hotel, Reacher and Neagley indulged in a game of cards and caught up on each other's lives. She shared that she was thriving in her career, having earned two promotions. Reacher, on the other hand, revealed that he had tried reaching out to everyone again, but no one responded. Neagley slyly inquired if he had tried Dixon, hinting at a past between the two. He quickly dismissed it, insisting that it was inappropriate as they were colleagues.

The game of cards came to an end when Reacher lost, signaling the end of their evening. He promised to reimburse Neagley for the room once his pension deposit arrived.

A flashback revealed the gang in a bar, merrily drinking. A uniformed man approached, reprimanding them for consuming alcohol in their uniforms. He specifically targeted Neagley, chastising her for being a junior and not belonging in an officer's club. He threatened to evict them all if she didn't leave. Undeterred, Reacher stood his ground. The uniformed man boasted, "We have 12, you have 9." Reacher retorted with a smirk, "That's a shame, just 3 short." Shortly after, a man flew out of a window, igniting a brawl between the two groups.

Later, the team gathered around a campfire, laughing, drinking, playing guitars, and dancing. Reacher turned to Neagley and shared that they had all learned a valuable lesson tonight: "Do not mess with the special investigators." He confessed that he had orchestrated the incident to test their teamwork, and seeing how they stuck together in the fight, he knew they could work together effectively. They posed for a team photo, capturing the moment.

In a strange dreamlike sequence, Franz appeared before Reacher, bloodied and bruised. He pleaded, "They tossed me from a helicopter, Reacher. What are you going to do about it?"

At LAX airport, a dapper gentleman claims he's merely a tourist, unburdened by any declarables. However, in the bathroom's solitude, he reduces his passport to ashes, later revealed to be a mere alias.

Meanwhile, Reacher and Neagley return to the post office, devising a strategy to uncover Franz's safety deposit box. Reacher begins his search among the colossal boxes, while Neagley adeptly distracts the clerk with her passionate portrayal as a die-hard stamp collector. Just as an inquisitive old lady alerts the clerk to their odd behavior, Reacher discovers the correct box, retrieves the mail, and they swiftly depart.

They uncover a flash drive, but Neagley's laptop lacks the necessary port to access it. Reacher insists on obtaining a firearm first, before making a detour to a church in a gritty neighborhood. There, he approaches the priest, inquiring about his cousin's whereabouts, a street-dwelling addict with a perilous drug habit. The priest provides a lead but warns of the dangers of venturing alone into such a treacherous terrain.

Undeterred, Reacher finds the street, collides with a drug addict, and brutally subdues him with a headbutt. He then kicks another man, steals his cash and firearm, and speeds off. Returning to the church, he donates the illicit drug money to the priest's outreach program.

Back in the bustling streets of L.A., the well-attired man encounters two individuals who furnish him with new passport aliases. However, he swiftly eliminates them both, as they now possess too much knowledge. With a swift slash to one's throat and a piercing stab to the other's stomach, he leaves them to their fate.

Reacher returns to the hotel, his eyes meeting Neagley's as they both enter the room. The sight before them is shocking—the room has been ransacked. O'Donnell, already there, catches Reacher off guard. His anger over Franz's death is palpable as he declares, "I loved that kid. Who are we hunting down for this?"

With time ticking, Reacher, Neagley, and O'Donnell race to guess Franz's password to unlock the flash drive. O'Donnell suggests "Reacher," thinking Franz might have admired him as a hero. It works, and they gain access.

A well-dressed man is booked on a flight to Denver, using the alias Andrew McBride. This name stands out on the list they retrieve from the hard drive, along with over ten other names, all beginning with A.M. Realizing they need reinforcements, they decide to track down Swan, a former team member.

As the episode draws to a close, Reacher, Neagley, and O'Donnell arrive at Swan's house and knock. Silence fills the air. Without hesitation, Reacher breaks in, and the team begins their search. They find Swan's dog, lifeless, having died of dehydration. Reacher knows Swan would never let his dog suffer such a fate, and they deduce he is probably dead. Unable to contact other team members, and with Franz's death confirmed and Swan likely dead, O'Donnell asks Reacher for his thoughts.

"I'm thinking there's someone out there, hell-bent on eliminating the special investigators," Reacher replies, his eyes hardening. "And they're coming for us. Good."
