Simon ventures a theory, suggesting that Xavier might be somehow involved in whatever mysterious events have transpired. Back at school, Maddie seeks solace and answers from the other ghosts, asking if any of them have ever spoken to the living. But they all shake their heads, leaving her more perplexed than ever. Mr. Martin, noting her struggle, suggests that writing her obituary might help bring closure. However, Maddie rejects the idea, unwilling to let go of her past life so soon. Her thoughts are consumed with worry for her mother, imagining how she's coping with the devastating loss. Mr. Martin tries to comfort her, assuring her that time will ease the pain, but Maddie remains unconvinced.

Meanwhile, a casual conversation with the janitor sets Simon's mind in motion, casting doubts on whether they're even looking in the right place for clues. The mystery deepens, and the tension mounts as each character grapples with their own fears and uncertainties.

The following morning, Maddie and Rhonda covertly eavesdropped on the teacher's conversation, their hearts thumping with anticipation. Rhonda was confident that the commotion surrounding Maddie would soon fade into obscurity, but Maddie stubbornly insisted that Simon wouldn't let it rest. As they listened, Maddie's heart sank as she learned that the blood discovered in the boiler room had been confirmed to be her own.

Meanwhile, Xavier sat at home, glued to the television screen, watching Spongebob as a distraction from the turmoil in his life. Suddenly, Claire appeared at his doorstep, skipping school to be with him. She confronted him about ignoring her texts, and he confessed that he couldn't bear to look at his phone. Claire offered her support, declaring that Xavier should only confide in her. He admitted his fears and swore that they would uncover the truth about Maddie's disappearance.

Later, Xavier's father made an unexpected visit, asking his son if he had swapped Maddie's phone. The police had found nothing on the device and suspected there was more to the story than meets the eye. Xavier's father was at a loss, warning his son to pray that nothing else would surface, as he was now a suspect. Xavier's anger boiled over, and he punched the wall in frustration.

At school, Simon struggled to understand how he had spoken to Maddie's ghost. Nicole clung to the hope that Maddie would soon return, while simultaneously feeling disgusted by the new grief teacher's persistent stares. As they discussed the mysterious events, Simon's eyes widened as he saw Maddie's ghost once again, beckoning him. Maddie pleaded for his help in solving her murder, convinced that she had been killed by someone she trusted.

Simon inquired about her memories, and Maddie recounted leaving the homeroom in search of her mother after she had appeared. Simon informed her that according to her mother's statement to the police, they had never met. This revelation chilled Maddie to the bone, realizing that something sinister had occurred after she left the classroom.

Simon probed further, asking how she had escaped from the boiler room. Maddie recalled waking up with a throbbing headache and seeing blood splattered on the wall. She described stumbling out and wandering along the hallway, only to find that no one could hear or see her. Simon pondered whether Xavier had enlisted Claire's help in disposing of Maddie's body, recalling that Xavier had been absent from his eighth-period class.

Determined to uncover the truth, Simon embarked on an investigation, scouring the school lockers for clues. However, he found little of significance in Xavier's locker. Meanwhile, Charley approached Maddie, inquiring about her progress and whether she could still communicate with Simon. He theorized that Simon might be seeing her because he was grieving deeply for her loss.

As they watched the janitor scrubbing Maddie's blood from the boiler room wall, Maddie silently visited Simon in his classroom. Simon excused himself from the class, claiming to need a break. The teacher regarded his behavior as odd but chalked it up to his grief. Maddie confided in Simon that the police had discovered her phone to be clean of any traces, suggesting that it had been swapped. She led him to a secluded spot around the school where she had once spent time with Xavier, hoping that the clues hidden there would lead them to the truth.

As they scour the vicinity, Simon inquiries Maddie about her attraction to Xavier. Maddie nonchalantly shrugs and confesses that she once found Xavier irresistibly charming, back when he was unscathed. She reminisces about an incident where Xavier dispatched a mouse, pondering if it was a prelude to her own demise.

Simon stumbles upon a fragment that resembles a piece of Maddie's phone, convinced that it was deliberately destroyed. He relays this discovery to Maddie, who persuades him to present the shard to Mr. Anderson. However, Mr. Anderson interrogates Simon meticulously about the location of his find.

Moments later, Simon notices police dogs sniffing around the school premises. One of the dogs zeroes in on something in Mr. Anderson's classroom, only to be told it's merely Maddie's discarded paper.

Elsewhere, Maddie joins the other spectral compatriots as they languish in the swimming pool. Charley spies his former classmate, now a proud father to a student. Back in their school days, Charley had harbored a secret crush on him. As they jest and tease each other, they bear witness to Claire rescuing a fellow student from drowning. This prompts Maddie to have conflicting feelings about her theory that Claire might have aided Xavier in her murder.

Outside the school, Xavier visits Maddie's mother and confesses that, although he hurt Maddie, it was not physically. He feels remorseful for betraying Maddie's trust. Maddie's mother also confesses her guilt for not being a better mother.

Back at school, Simon informs Maddie that the Sheriff might be shielding Xavier due to their familial ties. He's displeased that Maddie believes Claire is innocent and urges her to give him a chance to prove Xavier's guilt. Later, he meets Maddie at the spot where he discovered the phone fragments, only to be startled to find Mr. Anderson there as well.

In the gym, Mr. Martin quizzes Charley about whether he knows if Maddie has made contact with the living world, but Charley insists it's impossible. Charley harbors a hope that he might also establish contact with his old crush, but his efforts are fruitless.
