The group then migrates to another room to enjoy a meal and celebrate the day’s matches. Monica’s friends are in awe of her performance, but the atmosphere takes an unexpected turn when something even more astonishing unfolds. Robert, the very student she just soundly defeated, drops to one knee before her and proposes marriage.

Benjamin immediately cries out in protest, pointing out the lack of genuine affection in Robert’s proposal and its absence of any romantic poise. Nevertheless, the determined chess player presses on, explaining his reasoning. Given that he and Monica hail from different schools, their paths would likely never cross again. Thus, he reasons, marrying her would ensure they could continue playing chess together.

Monica, clearly frightened by his unexpected and intense gesture, tries to escape. Yet, Robert persists, calling out to her even as she attempts to flee. Fortunately, Felix and Cyril intervene, stepping between them and leading Robert away, their fury evident at his audacity in harassing a member of the student council.

As Monica catches her breath in a secluded spot, she is suddenly ambushed by a fire spell. Without hesitation, she casts a protective barrier—no chant required—and Bernie steps out from the shadows. His attack, he reveals, was a test to confirm her identity as the Monica he once knew.

Seizing the moment, Bernie launches into a tirade, belittling her. He accuses her of feigning student status to conceal her true nature, of flirtatiously engaging with others under a guise of innocence. He claims she pretends to be helpless to win favor with the second prince, branding her nothing more than a parasite.

Monica strains every nerve to hold back her tears, but he keeps needling her until she's on the verge of breaking down. Soon, Lana swoops in to rescue the distraught girl, attempting to whisk her away from the scene. However, she inadvertently rubs Bernie the wrong way by referring to Monica as a friend. Without even attempting to mask his hostility, Bernie warns Lana that she'll come to rue the day she became Monica's friend. He claims Monica is merely using her, and Lana will only realize that when it's too late.

This time, it's Lana who erupts in fury, staunchly defending her friend. Yet, the boy remains unyielding, continuing to hurl insults at Monica. Nevertheless, he makes a grave error when he starts belittling Lana. He remarks that Lana isn't fazed by being in the company of a genius like Monica because she's just an ordinary person.

Finally, Monica musters all her courage to stand up for her friend. She reveals that she has always looked up to him and aspired to be a friend who could stand on equal footing with the boy. But she's giving up on trying to win his approval. From this moment onward, she vows to never expect anything from him again. And that clearly strikes a chord with the boy.

He storms out of the room and seeks out his teacher. Bernie is clearly jealous of Monica and murmurs to himself that he craves all of her attention. Still, he fails to acknowledge this properly. So, he tells his teacher that he wants to be the first one to play the next game and go head-to-head with Monica.

Then, he and his teacher head to Professor Macragan's room to seek approval for the player switch. The request is granted without a hitch, so they return to their room to practice. And then, Bernie poses a peculiar question to his teacher: "Who are you?"

Meanwhile, a bird crashes into a window near Monica, leaving her visibly unsettled. She tells Lana that she's forgotten something and that she needs to go back and look for it.

Returning to Bernie, he points out that his teacher should have known who Macragan is, yet he acted as if he didn't have a clue. Moreover, the man agreed to practice with him, despite previously claiming that he wasn't proficient at chess and had nothing to teach them.

The teacher drops his facade of respectability, confessing to being a seasoned assassin. Despite Bernie's fierce onslaught, the man remains unscathed, as if Bernie's attacks were mere whispers of wind. To Bernie's astonishment, the assassin employs an arcane magic unknown to the boy, endowing himself with dragon-like attributes—thick, impenetrable skin and razor-sharp claws.

Bernie, undeterred, launches another assault, but he is hopelessly outmatched. The criminal ensnares him in an instant, his hands closing around Bernie's throat with lethal intent. Just as Bernie's vision begins to blur at the edges of darkness, Monica arrives on the scene, a beacon of hope.

The assassin, confident in his victory, traps Monica within a shimmering orb of water, his guard slipping for a fleeting moment. Little does he know, Monica wields a power that needs no incantation, a silent force capable of ending the confrontation in a single, decisive blow. In that moment, Bernie finally acknowledges the envy that has been gnawing at him—jealousy of Monica's strength and grace.

With a surge of energy, Monica unleashes her spell, a bolt of magic that strikes the assassin squarely in the head, leaving him crumpled and unconscious on the floor. Bernie, catching his breath, inquires how she knew of his plight. The answer comes in the form of a bird transforming into Ryn, the spirit guide.

Ryn congratulates Monica on her effortless victory over the assassin, revealing her true purpose—to safeguard Prince Felix. Yet, the path ahead is fraught with challenges. Monica must confront the necessity of unveiling her true intentions to the school, explaining her actions against the assassin, a revelation that will make concealing her true identity an arduous task.

When Cyril and Neil burst into the room, Bernie seizes the opportunity to take credit for the teacher's defeat, painting Monica as a mere bystander ensnared in the chaos. They accept his version of events without question, unwittingly aiding Monica's covert mission. In return for his silence, Bernie demands only Monica's eternal gratitude.

The chess tournament, once a beacon of excitement, is canceled in the aftermath of the violent encounter. Nonetheless, Monica finds solace in a silver lining—a renewed connection with Bernie, however tenuous. She harbors a secret wish that Bernie would one day grasp the depth of her gratitude, a sentiment that has lingered in her heart since their very first meeting.
