The fourth episode of Season 2 of "Severance" commences with Irving and the fellow Innies awakening in an eerie, surreal virtual realm—a snowy expanse with a television perched precariously on a cliff's edge. United by circumstance, they gather to watch a video that elucidates their predicament: a Team-Building exercise sanctions by their Outie counterparts. With limited alternatives, they reluctantly agree to participate in the game.
Traversing the dense forest, the quartet eventually stumbles upon a cave where their scavenger hunt resumes. On the cave wall, a book—nicknamed the "4th Appendix"—serves as their next clue. It reveals that Kier had a twin named Dieter at birth and, as they peruse its pages, they discern that they are mirroring Dieter's journey to a place known as Woe's Hollow.
As they continue their trek through the unforgiving wilderness, Irving voices his misgivings about Helly, particularly his distrust towards her Outie and the suspicious narrative surrounding the night gardener, which gnaws at his instincts, hinting at a deeper deceit.
Their concentration is momentarily diverted by a deceased seal lying beside a riverbank, prompting Irving to propose an unsettling solution: consuming the animal for sustenance. His demeanor suggests little interest in the charade, given his less-than-desirable encounters in the outside world.
Soon after, Milchick makes an appearance, offering additional exposition that merely reinforces what they've already deciphered about the twins and their shared path with Dieter.
Upon reaching a campsite adorned with tents and a comforting blaze, Irving privately confesses to Helly his embarrassment over the seal suggestion. He persists in probing her about her genuine experiences during the overtime contingency, but she remains steadfast in her silence. Her eyes narrow slightly, as if issuing a silent caution against further inquiry, which Irving interprets as an implicit invitation to delve deeper.
His persistence regarding the night gardener lie from prior episodes intensifies, mindful of Mark's objective impairment and Dylan's current allegiance to the company. The evening concludes on an awkward note, exacerbated by the revelation about Dieter and Kier, which concludes with Helly scoffing and dismissing it as absurd, much to Milchick's irritation.
As the night unfolds, Mark and Helly find solace under the same tent, their bond deepening as they confide in each other about their Outie personas. Helly opens up, revealing a shameful awareness of her alter ego's identity. However, just as their lips are about to lock in a tender embrace, Mark appears to malfunction, his kiss momentarily halting with a hint of hesitation.
Elsewhere, Irving ventures into the heart of the woods, determined to seek out Mr. Milchick. After a brief respite atop a moss-covered rock, his thoughts take a dark turn, plunging him into a nightmare.
Upon awakening, both Helly and Irving are discovered missing. Helly's journey leads her to the majestic waterfall, where Irving eventually catches up, confronting her about her harsh words directed at Burt. He insists that such cruelty is uncharacteristic of the Helly he knows, realizing with a shock that this is, in fact, her Outie self standing before him.
Upon extracting this startling confession, Irving's frustration reaches a boiling point, prompting him to shout for Milchick to intervene and rectify the situation. With a fury burning in his eyes, Irving threatens Helly with drowning, her carefully constructed veneer cracking under the pressure—especially when she inadvertently addresses him as Seth. In response, Milchick initiates a procedure known as the "Glasgow Block," and in an instant, Helly reverts to her Innie form.
Irving's actions ultimately cost him his job, while Dylan opts out of further cooperation, his expression a mix of amusement and triumph. With a defiant smirk playing on his lips, Irving bids farewell to his former colleagues and strides into the forest, only to meet his demise at the hands of the company's unseen enforcers.
