The episode kicks off with a scene where a man steps into Optics and Design, his eyes landing on what resemble surgical instruments. With these curious items in hand, he makes his way to what seems to be the very room where Irving Bailiff (played by John Turturro) once lost himself in paint. Elsewhere, Mark Scout (portrayed by Adam Scott) is engaged in a conversation with Devon Scout-Hale (Jen Tullock), recounting his inner self's daring escapade in the untamed wilderness. His words abruptly halt as Asal Reghabi (Karen Aldridge) enters the room, prompting him to inquire eagerly about when they can resume their exploration, his memory still a blank slate. She gently suggests perhaps later that evening.

Severance – Season 2 Episode 5 1

In another corner, Hell Riggs (Britt Lower) convenes with Mr. Drummond (Olafur Darri Olafsson) and Natalie Kalen (Sydney Cole Alexander) to dissect the recent occurrences at the retreat. As Helly reveals her intentions to descend back into that enigmatic realm, they caution her that Mark is reluctant to proceed without her, emphasizing the intricacy and significance of their mission.

Upon Helly's arrival at work, she is greeted by Miss Huang (Sarah Bock), who escorts her to a meeting with Seth Milchick (Tramell Tillman). Along the way, their path crosses with Mark and Dylan George (Zach Cherry). When Seth finally arrives, Helly's patience snaps, her frustration evident as she demands clarification on the unfolding mystery. Her discontent deepens upon learning about the Glasgow Block, while Dylan persists in his queries regarding Irving's whereabouts. Milchick breaks the tension by recounting Irving's treacherous act—a desperate attempt to silence Helena, who was on the brink of groundbreaking research, unbeknownst to Irving. He explains that Irving's dismissal was the only just course of action. However, this revelation does little to assuage their concerns. Matters worsen still when they are informed that Irving will not be returning.

The story of the Grakappan, shared by Milchick in an attempt to provide perspective, only serves to muddy the waters further, leaving the team more perplexed and uneasy than ever.Upon their return to MDR, the team discovers to their astonishment that their workspaces have been reconfigured to accommodate a trio, prompting Dylan and Helly to voice their strong disapproval. Irving's absence is even more poignantly highlighted by his exclusion from team photos. Dylan requests a funeral仪式 to commemorate Irving, a sentiment echoed by Helly and Mark. Once Milchick departs, Mark's coughing fit intensifies, forcing him to abruptly exit the room for the bathroom. Concerned, Helly trails after him, hinting at her inner turmoil and inquiring if he hadn't noticed her altered demeanor. He admits to blindness, yet a hint of awareness crosses his face when she probes further into his recent ordeal. He dismissively brushes it off and strides away.

While organizing the somber bereavement event, Huang cautions Milchick against allowing the funeral, fearing it will humanize them. She also reminds him of his looming performance review later that day. At the ceremony, Milchick grants Dylan the poignant task of eulogizing Irving, which he does by recounting a humorous anecdote about Irving's irritation over watered-down toner. Post-eulogy, the team honors Irving with a symbolic fruit offering. Dylan's emotions reach a boiling point when Mark announces his early departure, prompting Dylan to reveal to Helly that Gemma/Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman) is Mark's outie's spouse. Mark downplays the revelation, acting as if it holds no significance.

Helly persists in confronting Mark in the hallway, determined to discuss the new information. Her frustration mounts as Mark shrugs off their predicament, citing Lumon Helena's preemptive disclosure of their plans to Lumon. Helly pleads her case, insisting that she is her true self.

Prior to his performance review, Milchick seeks a heart-to-heart with Natalie concerning the paintings and their emotional impact on her. She steadfastly refuses to engage. Meanwhile, in a moment of solitude amidst Irving's funeral, Dylan stumbles upon a drawing of the Exports Room, with a cryptic note hidden beneath a poster. Milchick's performance review proceeds smoothly until the conversation turns to Mark and his team, casting a shadow over the otherwise positive session.

While engaged in his work, Mark suddenly feels a mild headache creeping in, accompanied by a disconcerting flicker of the photograph perched on his desk, as if it were struggling to maintain its presence. Decided by these peculiar occurrences, he opts to depart six minutes ahead of schedule. However, his exit is abruptly halted by Milchick in the elevator, who grills him about the remaining details of a funeral. The conversation takes a turn when Milchick inquiry if Mark has confided in Helly about his intimate encounter with her outie at ORTBO, leaving Mark speechless and hastily exiting the elevator.

Devon immerses herself in Ricken Hale's (portrayed by Michael Chernus) newly revised manuscript, offering insightful feedback. She warns him that Lumon is diluting his work to advance their own hidden agenda. Meanwhile, Irving's outie makes a discreet phone call, sharing his recent dismissal and speculating that Lumon was privy to his innie's undertakings. The conversation is abruptly cut short when he senses a watching presence, which reveals itself to be Burt Goodman (played by Christopher Walken). Burt quizzes Irving about his unexpected visit to his house, to which Irving responds with confusion. Burt deduces it was Irving's innie who paid the visit and reveals his own termination due to an illicit affair with a colleague. Despite his uncertainty about their relationship, Burt's husband, Fields, apparently believes they were an item. In an unexpected twist, Burt invites Irving over the next day for ham and an in-depth discussion about the unfolding mystery.

Returning to his abode, Mark encounters Asal rummaging through Gemma's belongings, asserting she seeks an item that might jog his memory. Mark's persistent cough interrupts their exchange, after which he impatiently inquires about their next steps. She assures him she needs just one more day. As Mark departs, his senses become increasingly distorted, visions and sounds haunting his steps until he finds himself inexplicably back at Lumon, where he bumps into Casey. The episode concludes with her ominous revelation that his outie is about to...
