Instead, they escape the confines and embrace in the vast fields.

The scene transitions smoothly to the present, where chaotic screams prompt healers to board Alina's ship in haste, carrying her and Mal away from the tumult. Meanwhile, Inej pleads with Kaz to regain his composure. With only six hours left to locate Alina, Inej's resolve begins to falter, and she considers abandoning the mission. Kaz stands perplexed, uncertain of his next move. However, his deliberations are cut short when Pekka confronts him with a threat.

Shadow And Bone – Season 1 Episode 2 1

Inej finds solace in conversation with Jesper in the bar, but is summoned away after confessing that Kaz's anger has clouded his judgment. Alina is ushered into General Kirigan's tent, where a hush falls. He demands to know her true identity, alluding to the Sun Summoner mentioned by Alexei in the previous episode, beyond the Fold. Soon, the truth is revealed as Kirigan discovers Alina's ability to summon light. With a ring in hand, he approaches her to verify if she indeed possesses the might of a Grisha.

As Alina struggles to contain her nerves, Mal rushes towards the tent. But he is restrained, helpless as a blinding light pierces Kirigan's quarters and soars into the sky. It becomes evident that she is indeed the Sun Summoner—a formidable weapon for the army. She is separated from Mal and embarked on a carriage bound for Os Alta, the bustling capital of Ravaka.

Meanwhile, Kaz stumbles across a means of escape—a mysterious figure known as the Conductor. And Inej finds a way out of her predicament. Prior to her employment with Brekker, she belonged to a brothel managed by Tante Heleen. Kaz still owes five more installments to liberate Inej from her bondage. Technically, she remains under Heleen's ownership. The woman refuses to let Inej cross the Fold until her debt is settled. To that end, she assigns Inej a target to eliminate.

If she could eliminate this man that very night, her debts would be forever extinguished. According to Heleen, this target was as menacing as Kaz himself. With urgency, Inej hastened to Jesper, attempting to pass the assignment to him. He declined, but pledged to assist her nonetheless.

Meanwhile, Alina's carriage was ambushed on the open road. Here, the Grisha's prowess was displayed in all its glory, their diverse skills clashing brilliantly against conventional firepower. Smoke bombs were hurled, choking the air and obscuring the battlefield. A bandit assailed Alina, but fortunately, a Darkling emerged and rescued her. As luck would have it, this Darkling was Kirigan, one of the Grisha himself. He grasped Alina and urged her to join him on a ride to the Little Palace. However, they had to halt midway, as Alina complained of a painful tailbone. This minor detail lent a touch of realism to this fantastical narrative.

During a brief respite, they learned more about the attack. The assailants were Druskelle, elite warriors of the Fjerdan military, trained to hunt and exterminate any who might be Grisha. Kirigan believed Alina could be this world's chosen summoner, a revelation that gave the Fjerdan ample motivation to pursue her.

The Sun Summoner, whose name had been whispered in whispers, was supposedly destined to enter the Fold and destroy it from within. Yet, to Alina, her powers were a curse, not a gift. She confessed her solitude, but the General reassured her, reminding the girl that she was no longer alone.

Back at the camp, news of Alina's attack spread like wildfire. Mal was distraught and desired to find her. Sadly, the Sergeant dismissed her plight, deeming her expendable.

In West Ravka, Kaz arrived in search of Poppy. He inquired bluntly about the Conductor, warning that Tante and Pekka were not the forgiving type. It then dawned on them that the Conductor was indeed the man Inej had been tasked to assassinate. This revelation caused Inej to falter.

The Conductor protested his innocence, claiming to be a liberator rather than a conspirator. He disavowed any connection to the White Rose but offered assistance nonetheless. Inej's patience wore thin, and she lunged at him with a knife.

Kaz appeared suddenly, delivering a bombshell: this man held the key to finding Alina. Heleen had known this all along and had been manipulating Inej. After saving the Conductor, Kaz requested his assistance in infiltrating the Little Palace.

For now, Kaz confronted Heleen and declared his intention to take Inej with him. He handed her a sealed envelope containing a letter addressed to The Crow Club. Heleen acquiesced to the terms, acknowledging that Inej was now Kaz's to lose.
