Published: Jul 17 2024

Episode 6 of Single Drunk Female commences with the lively ambiance of a tailgating party. Sam, amidst the bustle, unexpectedly comes across Nathaniel, her former supervisor at Bzzz, the man whose firing triggered her downfall. Seeing the significant improvement in Sam, Nathaniel approaches her with an offer. He believes she'd be a perfect fit for his fledgling company, Smug Media, and invites her to interview in the Big Apple.

When Sam shares this opportunity with her mother, Carol, her enthusiasm is dampened. The memories of Bzzz and how it led Sam to alcoholism are still fresh in her mind. She fears this new job might lure her daughter back to her old ways.

At the AA meeting, James senses Sam's high spirits. She confides in him about the impending interview. Coincidentally, James has also been invited to pitch his sobriety app in New York by some investors. Sam suggests a road trip, but James advises against it, fearing it might blur the boundaries of their friendship.

As the meeting commences, Olivia stands outside, greeting the attendees. Carol, unexpectedly, shows up, but her intention is not to support Sam. She arranges a coffee with Olivia later to discuss Sam's situation.

Carol unburdens her concerns about Sam's interview to Olivia. She fears it might trigger a relapse, and hopes Olivia can dissuade Sam from attending. However, Olivia clarifies that it's not her role as Sam's sponsor to make such decisions. It's Carol's responsibility to speak to her daughter.

Sam struggles with her writing samples. Alcohol had once made writing effortless, but now, without it, she's plagued with writer's block. Her frustration even spills over, causing her to snap at a grocery store customer. Mindy intervenes, reminding Sam that the only risk in this interview is not clearing it with her probation officer, which Sam had forgotten to do. Fortunately, the officer grants her permission on short notice.

Unexpectedly, Brit visits Sam at home, presenting her with a wedding invitation. She and Joel have decided they truly want Sam to be a part of their special day. Carol, gathering her courage, finally shares her fears with Sam. When she reaches Sam's room, she finds her struggling to write.

Sam reveals that Brit has invited her to the wedding, but she's hesitant to attend. Carol asks to see what Sam is writing, and she shows a blank page. She claims she can't write without alcohol, which leaves Carol in disbelief. She challenges Sam, saying that no one does anything better when drunk, and questions if Sam truly believes her work at Bzzz was exceptional.

Carol urges Sam to lock herself in the room and write, regardless of the quality. Even if it's terrible, it might still be good enough for Smug Media. As Carol leaves, James sends Sam a text wishing her good luck. Sam responds, admitting she can't do this alone.

The next day, as Sam waits for the bus to New York, James surprisingly shows up. On the bus, James drifts off to sleep, resting his head on Sam's shoulder. As the episode draws to a close, Sam pulls out her laptop and begins to write, determined to seize this opportunity and prove herself.
