As the sixth episode of Stranger Things' fifth season opens, Dustin sprints up to the rooftop, where Nancy has already fired at the ball of energy. The air crackles with electricity, and a portal suddenly materializes. Both are blasted back, sending a shockwave rippling across the entirety of the Upside Down. It transpires that Dustin has discovered Brenner's journal, which holds the key to destroying the wall that encircles this alternate dimension. This is not a shield generator but rather "exotic matter," a single source of energy that holds the wall together.

The catch? Holly and the others are not on the other side of this wall; death and an infinite void of nothingness await, serving as a black hole. As all seems set to be destroyed, Eleven carves a path to the Gate, protecting her group from being sucked into the wormhole. The Upside Down has always been a bridge between two worlds, and there's a truly awe-inspiring shot as this wave hits the walls, with Eleven's group right on the outskirts. They eventually make it out, but it's a hair-raising experience.
Nancy and Jonathan awaken to find themselves in the midst of the lab. They're still alive, but time is of the utmost essence. This exotic matter is turning everything into a sludge, and Jonathan and Nancy are stuck. The former goes full-on Dudley Boyz mode, urging Nancy to "get the table!" Dustin eventually makes up with Steve, while Nancy and Jonathan finally talk atop this table, surrounded by this deadly metallic goo. Nancy makes her choice and decides to be with Jonathan. As for Jonathan, he decides not to propose to Nancy, but he loves her, and she accepts his unproposal with open arms.
The pair is saved by the power of deus ex machina; the ring happens to be a conduit that stops the exotic matter from destroying everything... somehow. Meanwhile, Holly and Max continue to run through their memories until they reach the cave. However, Holly isn't staying here; she wants to try and get out, believing that Henry will find another way to reach them. The clue could well be the seemingly endless sands stretching outside the cave.As the first rays of dawn grace the town of Hawkins on November 6th, Will finds himself once again lost in a twilight realm, while Mr. Clarke is roused by Erika, her eyes ablaze with urgency—she begs him to construct a telemetry tracker. Robin's theory whispers through the shadows, suggesting that Max's condition isn't a comatose state but rather an enchanted slumber. She posits that their minds are intertwined, and with Max and Holly making a "prison break," this could be their chance to liberate them all.
Will awakens to find himself back in the same familiar confines as the prologue of episode 1. He is captured yet again, and this time, Vecna reveals a chilling truth—he has been using Will as a pawn, weaving the tunnels beneath Hawkins while Will slept, tirelessly orchestrating his plan. But Vecna hastens to add that Will's powers do not belong to him—they are Henry's. Vecna plans to use Will as his spy once more, to flush out Max.
Back at the radio shack, Hopper and El rejoin the group with renewed determination. El once again gazes into Will's comatose state, her powers straining to reach him. In El's absence, Kali lashes out at Hopper, her words carrying a weighty truth—killing Henry won't end everything. We know that El's blood is just as dangerous, and as long as she exists, she poses a threat to all, given the military's thirst for super soldiers.
For now, the most pressing matter is finding Will and gaining access to his mind. Hopper suggests amplifying El's signal, a desperate attempt to breach the veil between worlds. Joyce stands by Will's side, just as she did in season 2, her heart heavy with regret for not trusting him more. Hopper offers reassurance, explaining that he falls on the other extreme—too overprotective—and that Joyce is not on that same path.
El finally locates Will and endeavors to free him, while Max and Holly discover a hidden passage amidst the sandy expanse. Traversing the tunnel, they stumble upon a very young Henry Creel, who engages in a fierce struggle with a deranged individual and ultimately dispatches him with a rock. Holly watches from afar as Henry discovers a suitcase and unleashes its contents, though we are not privy to its contents as Max and Holly find their way out of Camazotz. Unfortunately, given Will's status as a conduit, Henry has learned of Max's whereabouts, and with her in the hospital, it doesn't take long for Vecna to send his minions to track her down.
At the hospital, Vickie and Robin engage in a conversation, where the former is astounded by Robin's account of events in Hawkins. Vickie disbelieves her and urges Robin to seek help, only for the military to swoop in and capture her.
Meanwhile, Lucas returns to Max's side and once again plays Kate Bush for her solace. However, this tranquil moment is shattered by the arrival of Demodogs, who launch an attack on the military. Bullets prove futile against them, prompting Karen to join the fray and shift the tide of battle.
Lucas bravely shields Max from the Demodogs' assault, while Robin and Vickie slip away, continuing to play the music that serves as a beacon for Max's escape. Max and Holly are nearly free when the Demodogs close in on them. However, they possess a secret weapon – Karen Wheeler. We have witnessed her inflict more damage on the Demogorgons than any military force, Hawkins Lab, or even some of the super-powered kids. This time, she employs a canister to explode a washing machine, eliminating the trio of Demodogs with it.
Back inside Camazotz, Max reveals that she no longer requires the music to connect with the real world; her conduit is now through Lucas. When he touches her, it provides her with an escape route. However, Kate Bush's melody continues to play in our world, unaware to Lucas of this development.
Giving Holly a rallying cry, Max finds her own portal and the two race to freedom.
