Shortly thereafter, at the Outpost, Edna Cranebear (Andrea Menard) elucidates to Frank Cranebear (Tom Jackson) the marketing prowess of donning shirts adorned with their brand logo. Maggie enters the scene, lending a hand in folding the t-shirts, her smile radiant. Frank remarks on the delight of seeing her smile return. A customer snags one of the shirts, prompting Edna to dispatch Frank on various errands.

Rafe Vadas (Dakota Taylor) and Cooper (Steve Lund) are overseeing a search-and-rescue training session, with Cooper emphasizing the need for speed among the participants. Cal swiftly vaults over the barrier, navigates through each tire, and slides beneath the netting with ease. Cooper is visibly impressed. Rafe introduces Cal as one of their volunteers, prompting Cooper to stress the significance of stringent screening, as lives hang in the balance. An elderly volunteer struggles through the course, prompting Cooper to rhetorically ask whom he aims to save, then blows Rafe's whistle, urging the volunteers to embark on another round.

At the Outpost, Helen Culver (Kate Vernon) drops by with a pile of her novels, and Maggie reveals she has been reading them during her breaks at the hospital. Helen inquiries if Maggie is a doctor, to which Maggie explains she has ceased practicing to aid in the family business. Helen shares her own journey of quitting teaching to pursue novel writing, believing in following one's passions. Sully arrives, headed straight for the coffee pot, which he finds empty. Edna suggests he brew a fresh batch, while Maggie mentions Helen's novels. He responds sarcastically, questioning if they've turned into a library. Helen laments a leaky faucet disrupting her work, prompting Edna and Maggie to nudge Sully into addressing it. Helen hands him a list of repairs for her cabin before departing, and Maggie senses a burgeoning camaraderie between them. Edna expresses her fondness for Maggie.

Elsewhere, Rob Shandon (Reid Price) informs Sydney Shandon (Lindura) that the landlord is unrelenting in lowering the rent, hinting at finding a new tenant. He compares the potential loss of the diner to losing Sarah, and Sydney insists on helping him find the perfect new location. In another corner, Cooper pushes the volunteers to their limits during a rigorous workout. Rafe worries they might burn out. Cal is plunged into a nostalgic reverie, remembering his father's insistence on being strong for his siblings, ordering him to perform ten more pushups. An exhausted young Cal Jones (Theo Lapaix) complies, lost in his thoughts, unaware that the drill has concluded. Rafe praises the volunteers for their exceptional effort.

Back at the Outpost, Maggie reads aloud from Helen's romance novel, while Edna jokes about the heat, suggesting an upgrade for the thermostat. Maggie wonders aloud why Cal hasn't visited after his training session.

Helen taps away at her typewriter amidst the clanging of Sully's repairs. She interrupts his work, hoping he can maintain some semblance of quiet. He replies that the noise of his hammering is unavoidable. Suddenly, a kestrel glides gracefully through the cabin's open space. Sully reassures her that the bird poses no threat, but Helen, unperturbed by his words, wraps a towel around the creature and sets it free back into the wild. Impressed by her bravery, Sully reveals that he's an avid bird watcher. Helen smiles, noting they share a common interest. They excitedly make plans to embark on a birding expedition the following day.

Meanwhile, at the Outpost, Helen finds herself moved to tears by the pages of her novel. Frank discovers her weeping and mistakenly assumes her sorrow stems from his prolonged absence. Helen clarifies that it's the novel, reminding her of their all-night adventures outdoors, that evoked her emotions. He takes her hand, marveling at her timeless beauty. She emphasizes the importance of staying occupied now that Frank is a partner in the enterprise.

Elsewhere, Maggie encounters Cal sitting pensively on his cabin porch. He confides in her about Cooper and suggests another movie night. Instead, he invites her to a picnic the next day. Sydney, on the other hand, receives a call from Rafe, who apologizes for working late and promises to make it up to her with an adventure on the fire truck. His explanation is cut short as Sydney hastily ends the call.

Later, at a local pub, Lola Gunderson (Amalia Williamson) shares that her internship as a social worker keeps her quite occupied. She reveals that her own childhood experiences help her connect deeply with the at-risk children she works with. Maggie and Sydney admit they haven't been intimate lately, and Lola insists she hasn't hooked up with anyone recently. They encourage her to flirt with a passing tourist.

At home, Sully delves into Helen's book, titled "Second Chance." Elsewhere, Frank finds Edna chopping onions with tears streaming down her face. She laments the swift passage of time. Frank comforts her, reminding her that aging is a privilege and suggests a soothing bubble bath. They share a tender kiss.

While Sully is engrossed in Helen's novel, Cal stops by to chat with him. Maggie is out with Sydney and Lola, leaving the two men to discuss the search-and-rescue volunteer program. Sully inquiries about compensation, and Cal confesses he has enough savings to buy himself some time to figure out his next steps. Sully shares how a heart-to-heart with his father helped him find his path. Cal doubts his own father could offer similar guidance but appreciates Sully's willingness to listen.

At the pub, Lola orders a glass of red wine. Maggie playfully encourages her to twirl her hair, attracting the attention of a passerby (Wiljo Martin). He invites her to the pier, but she politely declines. Intrigued by her sincerity, he persists. Lola turns around and accidentally bumps into Jacob Cranebear (Joel Oulette), spilling her wine all over his shirt. Despite her efforts to clean it up, she eventually gives up and returns to her seat. Sydney jokes that their encounter will be a one-time-only event.

The next morning, Rafe fires up the blender, causing Sydney to complain about the noise. He crafts a cocktail to ease her hangover but criticizes her for not appreciating his efforts on his day off. Sydney reluctantly swallows the drink and rushes to the bathroom.

At the picturesque beach, Cal unveils the contents of his picnic basket to Maggie, casting a hopeful glance as he inquires if he's somehow fallen out of her favor. She reassures him with a shake of her head, and their lips meet in a tender kiss. Cal then confides in her about the haunting flashbacks that troubled him during yesterday's drills. Just as they share this intimate moment, a search-and-rescue alert interrupts the tranquility. Cal offers to step aside and let Maggie handle it, but she firmly insists that he take the lead, noting it's his maiden call.

At the Outpost, Edna expresses her gratitude to Frank for his assistance the previous night. He wanders off to inspect the thermostat, while Helen arrives, regaling Edna with tales of her and Sully's bird-watching escapade. Edna gripes about the erratic temperatures, prompting Helen to suggest that she might be experiencing hot flashes. Edna, concerned, inquires about the severity of menopause, to which Helen elucidates its symptoms and the seven to ten-year duration.

At the search-and-rescue station, Rafe briefs Maggie and Cal on an emergency: a 25-year-old cyclist has plummeted over a ravine. Cooper reluctantly bars Maggie from participating due to her Canadian medical license. As Cal descends the cliff via rappelling, he momentarily loses his grip but swiftly regains composure. After steadying himself with deep breaths, he reaches the base and dashes to the injured cyclist, Jeff. Cal assesses Jeff's vitals while Jeff fears a fractured leg. Soon, Rafe and Cooper arrive with a Stokes basket, and together, they carefully load Jeff into it and commence the arduous task of ascending the cliff.

Elsewhere, Helen confides in Sully that though she has no children of her own, she raised her sister's daughter, Leigh. Sully, sharing a similar bond, reveals he raised Lola, who is like a daughter to him. They bond over the soothing power of nature. Later, Cal, exhilarated by the adrenaline of the rescue, confesses to Maggie that it made him feel alive. She, in turn, expresses contentment with her choice to stay at the Crossing by his side, and their passion ignites once more.

Meanwhile, Sully praises Helen's book, offering the serenity of his quiet dock as a sanctuary for her writing. However, his mood sours upon catching sight of a sign advertising a new luxury resort. Back at the Outpost, Lola enthusiastically discusses her internship with Edna and inquires about Sully's whereabouts. Edna mentions their birding trip, leaving Lola speechless when she learns Jacob is Frank's cousin. Embarrassed, Lola fabricates an excuse to depart.

Cal receives a distressing call from his mother, informing him of his father's declining health due to prostate cancer. With a heavy heart, he confides in Maggie, revealing his mother's plea for him to return home.
