The narrative begins with Susie's nightmares, prompting Maria to tend to her in the dead of night. But upon returning, Maria finds Susie missing, the bathtub overflowing with murky water. Shauna's lifeless body rises, eyes glaring white, staring hauntingly at her distraught mother. However, the figure morphs into Susie, grinning malevolently.

Meanwhile, Alec stands perplexed by the rising number of bodies in the swamp, hiding from a mysterious figure that emerges. Despite its menacing presence, he remains unfazed and delves into philosophical discussions about evolution.

Avery's true intentions are further exposed this episode, his affair unfolding before his wife's eyes. Just then, Jason Woodrue appears at the lab with Abby, probing her about Alec Holland. Before she can respond, Susie calls, urging Abby to her side. Apologizing to Maria, Abby rushes inside, only to find Susie under the eerie influence of Shauna's spirit. Terrifying visions ensue, including an eel emerging from her mouth, and Abby rushes outdoors where Madame Xanadu warns her of Susie's peril. Just then, Maria drives off with Susie, heading straight for the swamp.

Woodrue embarks on a solo exploration of Alec's lab, while Avery visits Liz, menacing her father. Yet, Liz stands firm, refusing to be intimidated.

Abby and Madame Xanadu race to the swamp, discovering Maria in a trance, stepping into the murky depths towards the shadowy figure of Shauna. Susie breaks free from the possession, pleading with Abby for help. She begs Maria to stop and apologizes for killing Shauna, only to provoke Maria into trying to drown Abby. Fortunately, Maria passes out soon after, allowing Alec to intervene and save Abby. As they emerge from the swamp, Alec reveals the truth behind Shauna's disappearance: she was dragged underwater by an ominous force, not by Abby's actions.

The police arrive, taking Maria to the hospital, and Avery soon follows, having seemingly hired thugs to target Liz. Woodrue informs Avery of his findings in the swamp, forcing Avery's hand and providing him with a number to track and hunt down the mysterious swamp creature.

"Swamp Thing" has delivered another exceptional episode, seamlessly blending horror with intrigue. The possession of a young girl remains a terrifying trope in horror, but the show manages to breathe fresh air into it, making the Shauna possession sequence both realistic and bone-chilling. Abby shines as a refreshingly strong female protagonist, her character nuanced and never overstated. This is a testament to the show's scriptwriting, which remains consistently brilliant. With an array of subplots and character details, the episodes continue to entice viewers, while the horror elements are back with a vengeance. With this solid episode, "Swamp Thing" promises an equally promising second half for DC Universe's latest drama, one that unfortunately won't be revived for another season after its inaugural run.
