Peeking through the window, she sees Sam and Wally putting a hammer inside a plastic bag. Judy notices Wally heading over to Sam's with a box full of things and muses on how they've been spending the last few days together. Wally gives a vague excuse about helping Sam put something together and leaves.

The Boroughs – Season 1 Episode 3 1

Inside Sam's house, Sam and Wally set up a machine called the HPLC to aid their research. That's when Neil, Claire's husband, arrives, asking for one of Lily's Bruce Springsteen albums. Sam says he hasn't found it yet. When Neil offers a book on grieving, Sam urges him to go back quickly. However, Neil reminds him that Claire is also going through her own grief.

Back at home, Judy makes some phone calls and digs up information on Sam, but doesn't find anything substantial.

Elsewhere, Renee comes across Art and says that her ex-husband is suing her. After using the HPLC, Wally realizes that the creature has right-handed chirality — as opposed to all other living beings on Earth, which have left-handed chirality. This proves that Sam didn't imagine things. However, Wally has also used up all of the creature's blood from the hammer. His next idea is to sneak into the funeral home to conduct an autopsy on Jack and find out what the creature was doing in his mouth.

Out in the desert, Art buries Brooksy while talking about his search for the divine, for proof that there is more to life.

That night, Sam and Wally head out to the funeral home and break the lock. While there, Sam hallucinates his wife's name on one of the wreaths. Suddenly, Judy jumps out at them. She knows they know something about Jack and threatens to pull the fire alarm if they don't tell her. They tell her that he was murdered and that the answer lies with Jack's body.

At the same time, Renee gets an alert from the security cameras she and Paz set up and calls him. She then heads over to the community center, where she hears noises and finds a box of quartz spilled onto the floor. But nothing else. Paz shows up by then as well. They look through the footage and see that the part of the video showing whatever pushed the box of quartz is blurred out. Paz puts it down to a bad camera.

At the funeral home, Judy and Sam step away while Wally conducts the autopsy. She tells the story of how she and Art fell in love during the counterculture era, decided how to live their lives, and even opened the door to having sex with other people. The only rule was don't fall in love. But Judy did fall in love with Jack.

Done with the autopsy, Wally calls the others in and shows them puncture marks in his throat, which end up connecting to the base of his brain. Like the creature was eating Jack.

Elsewhere, Renee and Paz kept their conversation flowing. Renee poured out her heart about her business dealings with her husband, who later went on to take all their money. He, in turn, shared his plight of needing to secure a job for his sister's surgery. As they got more comfortable with each other, Hank entered the storeroom and examined the box of quartz with an odd-looking device. The device picked up a handprint on it, but he didn't seem bothered. He then received a call from someone who had noticed people inside the funeral home.

In the desert, Art continued his trek through the remnants of the dead birds. He stumbled upon an old, wooden structure where the door kept banging against the walls. He ventured inside.

At the funeral home, Wally examined Judy and Sam and realized that both of them had the same marks on the back of their throats, indicating that the creature had also fed on them. Just then, Hank arrived and disrupted the group. Judy and Wally hid while Sam let Hank arrest him, saying that he just wanted to say goodbye to Jack.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, the creature sneaked into Renee's house and sucked something from her mouth as she slept next to Paz. At the same time, Art walked through a hidden path and discovered a magical tree, glowing with otherworldly light. He plucked an orange fruit that was covered in glitter. The glitter healed the cut on Art's hand in a matter of seconds. The episode ended as he took a bite of the fruit.
