The opening episode of The Diplomat's third season commences with the aftermath of Rayburn's demise, as Grace Penn ascends to the presidency, and the White House descends into a frenzied scramble to comprehend the reality of the situation and chart a path forward. All that they have to go on is the knowledge that Rayburn was initially in the sit room, then stepped out to take a call in the Oval.
Kate's voice pierces through the chaos, admitting that Rayburn was speaking with Hal. The priority now is to swear Grace in as the President, to restore some semblance of stability in the White House. Kate believes that moving to the Embassy is the way to go, as it presents a fortress-like image and conveys the right message to the public.
Hal is caught in a grilling session in the SCIF, under intense scrutiny by authorities about what he knows and the details of his phone call with Rayburn, who was unwell at the time. Kate worries that he might reveal incriminating details about the President.
Eidra Park is not pleased, given that she sanctioned that call in the first place, and questions Hal about what he was discussing with Rayburn. Kate herself is also questioned by Grace, who decides to keep her around to keep an eye on her.
Hal shows up amidst this chaos, confessing that he told President Rayburn about the False Flag attack. Hal believes he caused the man's death by sharing this news. Given that Hal acted independently and not under Kate's watch, she's not in the mood to engage with him right now. However, one person who is very talkative is Nicol Trowbridge. He rings through, eager to fly over and be present when Grace is sworn in.
Amidst the flurry of phone calls, Grace faces the unenviable task of reaching out to Carolyn Rayburn to offer her condolences. Additionally, she makes a call to extend asylum to Margaret Roylin in the United States. While Eidra expresses concerns about the latter, given Margaret's numerous enemies, she believes it could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise.
Meanwhile, Hal is confident that Kate will be sworn in as Vice President, convinced that it's only a matter of time. He can't help but share his excitement with Nora, who is well aware of Kate's capabilities and would make an excellent fit for the role. Kate is determined to ensure the inauguration runs smoothly and even helps Grace get dressed up for the occasion. Despite Grace's clear reservations about her, Kate reiterates her unwavering support as the President.
As if on cue, Trowbridge appears with a gift for Grace: a 1455 Gutenberg Bible, which brings an end to the humorous search for a bible that Howard had been on throughout the episode.
Later that night, Todd reunites with his wife, and amidst this emotional reunion, Hal seizes the opportunity to make a play for Kate's support as Vice President to Grace. He delivers an impassioned speech, full of conviction and charm.
The President then brings Hal and Kate before her and decides that Hal will be her Vice President.
