Episode 2 of Season 1 of "The Eternaut" kicks off with a haunting flashback to the era predating the lethal snowstorm. Within the confines of one of the apartment blocks, a clandestine gathering unfolds, where a cluster of individuals deliberates on the perplexing and relentless power outages that have plagued their lives. The conversation is abruptly interrupted by a sudden blackout, followed by the harrowing crash of a vehicle into the building's facade. One brave soul ventures out to assist the driver, only to perish instantly upon contact.
Elsewhere, Juan treads cautiously through the eerily silent streets, a somber tableau of corpses scattered around him serving as a grim reminder of the world's plight. Hauntingly, a whistling sound echoes through the air, yet no figure is visible to account for it. He encounters a desperate group of young people aboard a bus, their plea for assistance falling on deaf ears as Juan, possessing but a single mask, can only offer them water before continuing on his way.
Back at Tano's residence, an uneasy calm reigns despite the chaos outside. Tano's mind races with concerns over dwindling supplies, contaminated water, and Juan's delayed return. His paranoia peaks in a heated altercation with his wife and Lucas, fueled by his distrust of everyone, particularly after Omar's treacherous actions. He tasks Lucas with fortifying the windows, warning him of Inga and Omar's unreliability.
His suspicions may not be unfounded; Inga, a former military operative, and Omar, known for his cunning, pose potential threats. Inga's impatience grows, prompting her to don a helmet and prepare for departure. However, Tano, armed with a hastily crafted, amateurish mask, beats her to it, borrowing Inga's bike and stumbling upon a fascinating revelation. Upon inspecting the bike, he realizes that only vintage technology remains functional. To validate his hypothesis, he connects a radio to an old car battery, and to his delight, it springs to life.
Meanwhile, Juan's arduous journey finally brings him to Elena's building, the very same edifice that marked the opening scene of this harrowing tale. He hastens to her apartment, but his presence is not unnoticed.
They endeavor to inquire about his journey through the snowstorm, yet Elena and Juan confront an even more pressing concern: their daughter was nowhere to be found. Elena had granted her permission to dine with a friend's family, forwarding Juan the address via message. Alas, with their phones rendered inoperative, they were left without that crucial information. Juan proposes venturing to their daughter's friend's school to procure the address.
As their conversation unfolds, whispers of his arrival ripple through the neighborhood, drawing their inquisitive neighbors who insistently demand to know how he navigated the snowy terrain. They clamor for a glimpse of his mask, but Juan intuits the peril in revealing it. Drawing his pistol, he attempts to exit the confines of the building.
Tensions escalate as the neighbors, too, arm themselves. Gunfire erupts, prompting Juan and Elena to scramble to the second floor, where they seek refuge in an abandoned dwelling. Juan urges Elena to don the mask and venture to the school, to which she reluctantly assents. Swiftly, they fashion a makeshift suit for her, and with a leap, she exits through the window, landing gracefully on the truck below. Juan stays behind, determined to deter the encroaching neighbors as long as possible.
Once Elena is gone, the neighbors manage to breach the building. Juan, desperate, drapes a plastic sheet over his head and shatters the window, prompting everyone to flee. With a daring leap, Juan follows suit, only to succumb to suffocation shortly thereafter.
Elsewhere, Tano and his companions utilize their makeshift masks to reach the fire station, where they gather essential resources—masks and fire suits. Alerted by the gunshots, they make haste to Juan's aid and rescue him just in time.
As Juan lies unconscious, his mind wanders to a surreal valley. He beholds a figure, and the world around him turns a crimson hue. He awakens in an old truck, discovered by his loyal friends. To his relief, Elena is by his side.
