The second episode of The Iris Affair commences with a gripping scene where a fisherman discovers the charred remnants of a police officer and his vehicle on the beach, a smoldering spectacle that is hard to miss. Iris, ever the observer, keeps a watchful eye on the unfolding events, despite the heavy presence of guards. She promptly reaches out to her lover, Teo, who works for the police and is at the helm of the investigation into the car found on the shore.
Iris demands to know the identities of the investigators who were inside her home and blackmails Teo into compliance, threatening to expose their affair and fabricate a story of him killing his wife if he doesn't play along. With little choice but to comply, he agrees to assist her.
Teo ventures to the beach and discovers the car alongside his partner, Nico Casterman. The two shady officers from the Special Cases Unit, Commissioner Krauss and Deputy Baptiste, quickly arrive on the scene, their noses twitching like hounds on a scent. We learn that they belong to Bruni's taskforce and are searching for the deceased man in the burned-out car, who was in fact one of their associates.
The officers display a picture of Iris to Teo, and he stumbles through a clumsy lie, claiming he's never seen Iris before. But his lack of poise is evident, while Nico chimes in, breaking the ice when Teo is frozen in shock and admits that he recognizes Iris as Joy's tutor at the Ferrante villa.
As Iris realizes her funds have vanished, she finds herself in a predicament. Her personal accounts have been completely wiped clean, and the realization hits her like a bolt from the blue. Cameron, in a quirky little graphic, takes responsibility for hacking into her accounts and follows up with a phone call demanding she surrender the diary she's stolen. Iris, however, refuses, wanting to know why Jensen killed five people and what Cameron is hiding from her regarding Charlie's significance. She's getting closer to cracking the puzzle, realizing the code has been changed every week, adding another layer of complexity to everything.
Apparently, Jensen is convinced that this AI is the Lamentation of God and could have acted out after realizing how awful this Charlie thing would be for the world should it be unleashed.
Elsewhere, Teo is grilled by Baptiste, who knows Iris has a habit of finding officers with troubled marriages and working as a homewrecker to worm her way in. The trouble is, Iris has no way out so she rings Teo while he's with Baptiste. Teo pretends he's on a call with his wife and points out that the assassin she killed was a cop. Iris is confused and eventually asks for his help, but Teo critically points out that her time is running out and the noose is tightening right now.
For now, Teo and Baptiste head up to see Joy and the family but Joy refuses to divulge anything, taunting them. As for Iris, she hides in a hidden walkway under the apartment complex she's staying in and makes her way out when the cops storm the place, padlocking the doors with chains behind her before slipping away.
As Iris rushes up the street, it doesn't take long for the police to chase after her after getting a match on her description. Two cops find her and beat the woman down, calling her a cop killer while the others search through the apartment, tracking down clothes tags that they believe are linked to Iris.
Despite Iris' perfect match to the woman they're hunting, the patrol cops are sent back to search for a woman with the exact same description, only this time in a dress. They hurry off, leaving Iris to her own devices. Baptiste, however, is no fool. He knows Teo has been weaving a web of lies, and he confronts the man on the road, feigning a play to lure Iris into a false sense of security.
Baptiste is certain he can use Teo as a pawn, confident that when Iris calls him again (and he's sure she will), they can bring her out into the open and capture her. But Iris has other plans. She enlists Joy's help and, back at her cabin, uses the girl to uncover a second, hidden safe beneath the first. After giving her the codes, Joy discovers a silver briefcase and Iris instructs her to hide it inside a hollow tree 200 meters away.
Joy does as she's told, but alas, it seems like her luck has run out for about three seconds too soon. It turns out someone has been watching her the whole time—Krauss from the Special Cases Unit. He snatches the suitcase and takes off, leaving Joy to lament her misfortune. Whoopsie!
