Episode 7 of "The Last Thing He Told Me" kicks off with Hannah storming over to Charlie, insisting on seeing Nicholas without delay. Charlie hesitates, torn between loyalty and her relentless determination, but Hannah persists until she wears him down.
Meanwhile, Bailey is collected by Grady from Reyes' residence, utterly unaware that Hannah has discreetly slipped away, leaving the Marshall's office in the dark about her whereabouts.
Charlie eventually leads Hannah to a serene lake house, a family retreat acquired in the wake of Nicholas' incarceration. A poignant revelation unfolds here: Meredith, the mother of Charlie, Kate, and Nicholas, passed away on the very day Nicholas was freed from prison.
When Nicholas greets Hannah, he subjects her to a thorough search, ensuring she's unarmed and not wearing any recording devices. He then requests a private conversation with her, acknowledging he's well-informed about her identity and Sausalito residence. Though Charlie is apprehensive, Hannah exudes confidence, believing she can persuade Nicholas to make a deal.
While this tense encounter unfolds, Grady has pinpointed Hannah's location. The Marshalls spring into action, and Bailey receives a call from Owen. It's evident that Nicholas deeply cherishes the time he spends with Bailey (alias Kristin), yet he harbors no forgiveness for Owen. Their bond was once filled with love, but Owen shattered it all by convincing himself that Nicholas or his associates were responsible for Kate's demise.
With a defiant clarity, he conveys that they are well aware of the perilous consequences of laying a finger on Kate. Nicholas emphatically states that he harbors an unforgiving resentment towards Owen for his actions, rendering it utterly impossible for him to guarantee Owen's safety, be it willingly or otherwise. Without a moment's hesitation, he strips Kirstin from the warmth of her family, oblivious to the devastating impact it would have on both them and her. Despite Hannah's insistence that Owen's decision to flee with Kristin was motivated by her safety, he fails to accord Owen any respect for such a move.
Owen's mind races with the thought that if Kate could be a victim of murder, what barrier could possibly deter her killer from pursuing Kristin next? When Nicholas makes it unequivocally clear that ensuring Owen's safety is beyond his reach, Hannah steps in to propose the terms of her "bargain." She believes that Nicholas, with his substantial influence over his clients and the organization, possesses the clout to persuade them to abandon their pursuit of Owen, referencing the six and a half years he spent in jail on their behalf. Yet, he flatly refuses this suggestion.
Hannah then extends an offer—guaranteeing her safety in exchange for access to Bailey. She implores the parental instincts within Nicholas to act out of compassion for her plight, urging him to set aside thoughts of retaliation against Owen. Nicholas appears momentarily touched, finding solace in the idea. Hannah comprehends that Owen's departure was a strategic move to shield Hannah and Bailey from potential harm. Their presence could have inadvertently drawn danger to their doorstep.
Suddenly, a SWAT team, accompanied by Grady and other Marshals, makes its presence known. Hannah swiftly comes to an agreement with Nicholas and walks away, the deal sealed.
With a fervent determination, Grady endeavors to persuade Hannah from embracing the deal proposed by Nicholas. He harbors a steadfast belief that neither he nor his organization will ever cease their pursuit of Owen. They might refrain from targeting Bailey, but they will undoubtedly resort to harming Hannah to reach Owen if they ascertain her whereabouts. Hence, he urges her to accept the authorities' offer of a secure safehouse rather than succumbing to Nicholas' proposition. However, Hannah asserts that the decision has been made, and her resolve remains unshaken.
Upon arriving at the Marshall's office, Bailey warmly embraces Hannah, visibly relieved to witness her well-being. Grady presents Bailey with the option to accompany the Marshalls and be placed under protective custody, affording her the liberty to choose any destination she desires. Yet, she opts to return home – to Sausalito – alongside Hannah. During their conversation, Bailey discloses that Owen had contacted her briefly, for precisely 22 seconds, expressing his remorse, affirming his prolonged absence, and urging her to heed Hannah's advice.
Hannah gently explains to Bailey that her family in Austin will soon visit Sausalito. Bailey, however, appears cautious and prefers to take her time. In a poignant moment, Hannah releases herself from the cherished memories she holds of Owen and the promises they shared.
The narrative shifts five years into the future. Hannah is exhibiting her craftsmanship, and Bailey arrives with her boyfriend, eager to introduce him to Hannah. Suddenly, Hannah catches sight of a man wearing a ring crafted by Owen using her machinery. It is indeed Owen, now adorned with a long beard and hair. In a hush, Owen whispers into Hannah's ear, "The could-have-been boys still love you," before disappearing into the crowd. Bailey and her boyfriend soon join Hannah, and she warmly embraces them. This line serves as Owen's subtle encouragement for Hannah to move forward with her life.
This reference stems from an earlier conversation they shared, where Owen inquired about Hannah's past relationships. Having made up her mind to marry him, Hannah referred to those men as "he could have been boys." Though somewhat confusing, this sentiment blends into the somewhat disappointing conclusion of their saga.
