The Law According to Lidia Poet – Season 2 Episode 4 1

Andrea, desperate and confused over the victim, whom he claims was introduced as a family acquaintance yet unknown to Letizia's father, implores Lidia for assistance. Lidia, driven by curiosity, presses Fourneau to reveal the grim secret of the bloody wedding dress that led to Letizia's arrest.

Back at their abode, Anna is engrossed in organizing Enrico's political campaign, even securing him a telephone. Nervous about delivering his speech, Enrico seeks Lidia's guidance, which she conditionally grants in exchange for his commitment to take on Letizia's case. Together, they confront the accused woman who steadfastly maintains that she left the dress pristine and untouched on the bed. Andrea, emotional and convinced of Letizia's innocence, blames a setup and looks solely to Lidia for justice.

Elsewhere, Jacopo has unveiled his newspaper, "The Whip," and confronts Juvara, demanding a statement on Atilla's death, given the editor's past as a bank director under scrutiny. Juvara responds with a chilling threat to shut down "The Whip" for defamation.

Lidia, feeling guilty for manipulating Fourneau, seeks his forgiveness and brokers a pact: they will collaborate, sharing insights to uncover the truth. Fourneau has already uncovered a clue—pink clay on the deceased's shoe—which resonates with Lidia's memory of similar clay found on Jacopo's tennis racket.

At the Poet household, conversations about Marianna's dowry are abruptly halted when Juvara storms in, threatening to sue Enrico for using "The Whip" to tarnish his reputation. Enrico pleads with Jacopo to cease his writing about him, a request echoed by Lidia, who recognizes that such actions could elevate Juvara to martyrdom.

In gratitude, she escorts Jacopo to the tennis court, where they uncover the victim's identity as Alfredo, the diligent caretaker. Their investigative prowling around his abode unearths a treasure trove of cash belonging to Emilio Zonta, a notorious loan shark. Deducing that Alfredo was Zonta's ruthless debt collector, the Poets' possession of the chest draws the shark's wrath as he emerges, menacing them with dire consequences.

Lidia brokers a deal: Letizia's father will offer 20% more than the chest's contents if he assists them. Overjoyed, Zonta reveals Alfredo's true mission—not to collect debts, but to reconnect with his son. Andrea and Lidia, mistaking Allegra's son, Romeo, as Alfredo's offspring, confront Letizia. Yet, the truth unfurls in reverse: Letizia, once smitten with Alfredo in her youth, bore the scars of his brutality. She subtly hints that Romeo is the outcome of a violent rape, prompting her escape to America, where she falsely passed him off as Allegra's.

At the wedding, Alfredo's demand for Romeo's custody, under threat of force, escalated into a lethal struggle. Refusing to return to Alfredo, Letizia, choke-gripped by him, retaliated with a letter opener, ending his life in self-defense. Lidia, torn by the absence of witnesses that could justify Letizia's actions, foresees a court portrayal of Letizia as an unethical mother who stole Alfredo's son. Andrea, heartbroken by Letizia's lack of confession, grapples with Lidia's reasoning. Observing her own sacrifice for Jacopo, he vows to shield Letizia, loving her despite her secrets.

Together, they devise a subterfuge—planting Andrea's signature in Alfredo's chest, implicating him as a debtor to Zonta. This false evidence will mislead the police, making Andrea the prime suspect in Alfredo's murder and paving Letizia's path to freedom. Yet, their plan entails Andrea's exile, from which Letizia will eventually join him.

Letizia loathes the notion, unable to countenance allowing him to sacrifice his future on her account. She turns to Lidia, inquiring whether she would take the same path, yet Lidia, who has never experienced such profound affection, lacks the empathy to comprehend. Determined, Letizia gathers her courage and confesses her feelings to Fourneau. However, the judge mistakenly embraces the deceit, swayed by Fourneau's silence. Meanwhile, Lidia is deeply touched by his perceived comprehension, unaware that he is actually abashed because he harbors feelings for her and yearns to ask her out. Finding his bashfulness endearing, she warmly accepts his invitation to dinner.

Switching to Enrico's speech, nervousness causes him to fumble with his papers, ultimately abandoning them to speak from the depths of his heart. He elucidates the relativity of the law, asserting that when it conflicts with one's principles, it must be rewritten. Acknowledging these sentiments as Lidia's, he humbly accepts the role of her voice. As he concludes, the Parliament rises to its feet in a thunderous ovation, leaving him emotionally overwhelmed.

Elsewhere, Cesare tracks down Marta Ricci, Nitti's housekeeper, who still receives rent for her shop from him. Jacopo, cunningly plotting, intends to seduce her to uncover Nitti's whereabouts. In a separate scene, Andrea bids Lidia a poignant farewell over the phone, unaware that their conversation is being eavesdropped by a lurking gunman.

Concluding the fourth episode of Season 2 of "The Law According to Lidia Poet," Jacopo poses a poignant question to Lidia, mirroring Andrea's dilemma. She concedes that she would go to similar lengths for a loved one, leading to a tender kiss interrupted by her revelation of her upcoming dinner date with Fourneau. Heartbroken, he drowns his sorrows in alcohol and storms off. Meanwhile, Fourneau awaits her at the restaurant, ultimately departing empty-handed.
