On her journey to Wagner, Nella listens to Jesse Watson's podcast, its empowering message urging her to be unapologetically authentic, even in the face of hatred. As she reaches into her pocket to read the mysterious note, a stranger interrupts, inquisitive about cheating and the mysterious Wagner, forcing her to hastily retreat.

The Other Black Girl – Season 1 Episode 2 1

Upon arrival at Wagner, Sophie informs Nella of a surprise gathering in the conference room, organized by Hazel with pastries in tow. Nella finds herself in an awkward conversation with her colleagues, who mention the incident with Colin at the party and the buzz it has created.

Returning to her cubicle, Nella encounters Hazel, her annoyance evident as Hazel acts oblivious to her wrongdoings. Nella queries Hazel about the note, but Vera's urgent summons interrupts their confrontation.

Nella offers Vera a heartfelt apology, grateful for her constant acknowledgment of her opinions. Vera advises her to apologize to Colin when he arrives, promising that will be the end of the matter. However, Nella proposes the idea of hiring a sensitivity reader for Colin's new book, hoping it will salvage Wagner's reputation. Vera fears this will only infuriate Colin, leading to his departure from Wagner. She assures Nella she will intervene with Colin to save her job, but warns that if she fails to apologize, her conversation with Richard will take a different turn.

Nella attends Malaika's housewarming party, sharing the details of the note with her. Malaika surmises it as a hate crime, likely originating from Colin Franklin. Owen joins the conversation, his indignation rising as he hears of Nella's plight. Nella fears that the conflict with Colin will undo her hard work over the past two years and she desperately needs Vera's trust once again.

Vera returned to the office, her stride suddenly halted by a sense of unease while printing some crucial documents. She crept through the silent halls, armed with only a stapler for protection, in search of the unknown intruder. Her gaze fell upon the archives, where she stumbled upon Diana Gordon's tome, "Burning Heart."

The following day, Vera strode into the office with a renewed vigor, greeting her colleagues with a smile as she headed to her cubicle. Hazel noticed the change in her demeanor, but Nella chose to ignore the comment. As Vera passed by Nella's workspace, Nella beckoned her. She proposed a revival of "Burning Heart," timed perfectly for the book's momentous 35th anniversary. She had elaborate plans, from profit-loss projections to mock-ups and an alluring new cover design. She even suggested roping in Kendra Rae Phillips to write the forward for this revival, despite the author's absence from the public eye for 35 long years. Vera questioned how Nella intended to find Kendra, suspecting her of trying to evade an apology to Colin Franklin.

Vera revealed the designs for Colin's book covers, signaling that the publication was inevitable regardless of Nella's objections. She reminded Nella that her role encompassed more than just her own opinions; it involved catering to the needs of authors and the staff at the publishing house. Nella, enraged, retreated to the bathroom, where she encountered Hazel. Nella accused Hazel of betraying her with Colin, but Hazel insisted she had no such intention. She recounted her struggles with another unsupportive black woman at her previous job and how she had tried to encourage Nella, seeing how the Shartricia incident had weighed on her. She regretted not expressing her support in a more appropriate manner. Hazel upheld Nella's proposal for a sensitivity read and assured her that she didn't need to apologize for her beliefs.

Colin's arrival at the office sparked anger, seeing Nella still employed at Wagner. Vera orchestrated an apology from Nella, who reluctantly admitted her oversight in understanding the complexities of the character in her initial reading. Colin accepted the apology with satisfaction, but Nella was left emotionally shattered. She messaged Malaika, urging her to persevere. A fleeting vision of Kendra Rae Phillips hovered in her mind, asking what she would do next.

Nella texted Jesse, inquiring if he had ever considered writing a book. She proposed collaborating with him, and Vera invited her to join the meeting with Colin. After selecting the author profile, Vera subtly introduced the idea of a sensitivity read. Richard endorsed the notion, ensuring due diligence, much to Nella and Hazel's surprise. Hazel rose to inquire if the sensitivity read was Nella's idea. Vera acknowledged Nella's contribution, emphasizing the importance of giving credit where it was due. Vera apologized, and Richard applauded Nella for her forward-thinking suggestion.

On the subway ride home, Nella flipped through the "Burning Heart" materials, her attention drawn to a note protruding from the pages. As she arrived home, Owen suggested they watch "Bake Off" together. As they embraced and kissed in their cozy abode, Hazel spied from afar, her expression betraying her displeasure with the scene unfolding before her eyes.
