The Paper – Season 1 Episode 10 1

So, what unfolds for Ned at the awards ceremony? Marv makes his entrance at the ceremony, accompanied by Anne and his brother. Esmeralda makes a striking appearance, donning a dramatic red dress that commands attention. Ned, trying to maintain a nonchalant facade, informs the team that he's indifferent to winning the awards, insisting he doesn't crave validation from strangers. Yet, beneath his cool exterior, Ned is a bundle of nerves, though he musters up the courage to project confidence in front of his teammates. Adding to his unease, Mare arrives at the ceremony with a date, further intensifying Ned's self-consciousness. Mare picks up on Ned's subtle jealousy towards her date, Theo.

Now, how do Ken and Esmeralda behave at this glitzy event? Feeling somewhat like outsiders, Ken and Esmeralda find themselves seated among the non-nominated writers, while Marv basks in the company of the nominees and his family. Both Ken and Esmeralda make valiant attempts to catch Marv's attention and favor, but their efforts fall flat. In a desperate bid for attention, Ken even concocts a plan to make Marv choke on something, envisioning himself as the hero who dramatically saves the day. However, it's Oscar who ultimately comes to the rescue, assisting both Marv and his brother.

And what about the tension brewing between Detrick and Nicole? Nicole pulls Detrick aside to reveal that one of the girls he's been seeing is present at the ceremony. She urges him to go and talk to her, but when Detrick declines, Nicole takes matters into her own hands. Approaching the girl, Nicole confronts Detrick with her displeasure, accusing him of leading her into an exclusive, monogamous relationship without her consent. Detrick, taken aback, confesses his commitment to Nicole but ultimately decides to call an end to their ambiguous "situationship."

How does the grand finale of the Ohio Journalism Awards unfold? Oscar emerges victorious, securing the award in the very category for which he had been nominated. In his heartfelt acceptance speech, he extends his gratitude to the documentary crew, as well as to Marv and the entire TTT team. Mare, too, claims victory in her category and shares a warm embrace with Ned, who beams with pride for her.

In her speech, Mare expresses her appreciation to her former editors and Ned, but inadvertently omits Esmeralda from her acknowledgments, sparking a fit of rage in the latter. Meanwhile, Marv beams with pride over Ned's achievements, while Ken and Esmeralda are left seething with envy. Esmeralda, unable to contain her frustration, attempts to create a scene at the ceremony, only to end up embarrassing herself in the process.

To calm Ned down, Mare takes him for a stroll, and the two inadvertently stumble upon a wedding celebration down the hall. Seizing the moment, they join in the festivities and begin dancing. As Ned rehearses his acceptance speech, the pair shares an intimate moment before being unceremoniously ejected from the venue when the bride discovers their uninvited presence.

Ned ultimately clinches the final award for Toledo Truth Teller, but finds himself stranded outside the building. Seizing the opportunity, Ken and Esmeralda attempt to steal the spotlight and claim credit for Ned's win. Meanwhile, Ned and Mare frantically try to rush back inside, sneaking through the back gates as Esmeralda and Ken make fools of themselves on stage.

Ned finally manages to make it onto the stage to deliver his speech, but Esmeralda, in a desperate bid for attention, fakes a fainting spell to steal the limelight.

How does The Paper draw to a close? The TTT team revels in their respective triumphs, and Ned takes a moment to step away from Mare, who had been seen with Theo. Ned, Oscar, and Esmeralda engage in a conversation about Marv, whose affection for his sister-in-law, Anne, is painfully obvious. Oscar encourages Marv to pursue love, a notion that resonates with Ned and spurs him to confess his feelings to Mare.

He seeks her out in her room and reads from his prepared speech, which openly expresses his love for her. As he prepares to depart, Mare calls him out for his tendency to run away. She then reveals that she's not involved with Theo, but rather with Nicole, still reeling from a painful breakup with Detrick.

Though hesitant at first, Ned ultimately leans in for a kiss, and the two share a passionate moment as the episode fades to black.
