The fifth episode of The Rig's second season kicks off with a tense scene, as Bremner trains his gun on Rose and Magnus, placing them both in immediate peril. Fulmer catches sight of this perilous tableau, while Harish rushes to inform Easter of the unfolding drama. Bremner, convinced he's aligning himself with the victorious faction, reveals his meticulous planning—evidenced by the empty gun storage—indicating that this coup has been in the works for quite some time.
Lennox discovers to her shock that her access privileges to Pictor have been summarily revoked. Meanwhile, York grapples with the futility of reasoning with Bremner, his intentions all too clear. Cat finds herself in a desperate bind, forced to ensure Kasey's comfort as hospitals overflow and relocation is impossible. Confessing to Hutton her initial mission to locate Kasey, which she has now accomplished, Cat remains undecided about whether she will escalate her efforts to dismantle the company.
Hutton visits Lennox, who stands her ground amidst scrutiny concerning the missing log. Her resolve is further solidified when she stumbles upon Cat and Kasey together in a tent. Witnessing the dire circumstances they all endure, Lennox decides to wield her influence and make some crucial calls to alleviate their plight.
Elsewhere, amidst the enveloping darkness, Magnus and the others manage to navigate their way back to the Stac, though the specifics of their journey remain unseen. They converge to devise a strategy to confront Bremner, Magnus advocating for exploiting the element of surprise to gain the upper hand. Alas, they arrive a step too late, as Bremner uncovers the crucial information—the data drive is actually housed in the lab.
In order to cause some chaos, Bremner gives a comms announcement to send everyone down to the subsea module. He does so to make sure they’re alone, and with the remaining crew onboard gone, it also gives Heather and Askel time alone to work with the signal and the samples of the Entity. They’re not in the lab though but actually in what looks like the med-bay for some reason. And they don’t have their power shut down either.
In the wake of this, Magnus and the others do get the jump on Bremner, watching him on the cameras and figuring out his location.
Unfortunately, the blast doors are shut down in the carnage and the floors locked from one another. This is a particular problem because although Rose and Cameron make it to the lab, the actual data card is down in Ore Processing. Cameron lied to buy them time and now it has backfired.
Bremner manages to switch the power so only the emergency protocols are active, and that means all the blast doors active and those personnel inside locked for the time being. With the back-ups on, it remains a tense affair in the hallways as Magnus and Fulmer work to try and hunt Bremner before it’s too late.
Bremner heads down to the lab and searches for Cameron and Rose. He doesn’t get anywhere but literally seconds later, Fulmer and Magnus arrive. They believe they’re in the clear, unaware that their foe is lurking just round the corner. Fulmer and Magnus open up the lab doors, thanks to some tinkering with the vents outside, and are all joined together.
Thankfully, the lab is really close to where Ore Processing is, and the door is open too. The gang head on inside, where Cameron brings out the data drive and hands it over to Rose. Just as he does, the power comes back on again.
Oblivious to the world beyond their confined space, Heather and Askel engage in an intense conversation, delving into the nature of the signal and the sample they possess. It becomes evident that the signal was not a manifestation of fury, but rather a desperate plea for assistance. This revelation clarifies how they had miraculously navigated their way back from the treacherous ice, using the signal as a beacon to lead them once more to the Stac.
Meanwhile, Lennox leverages her connections and secures a supply of medication for everyone's aid. One wonders why she hadn't done so sooner, but she proceeds to hand over a USB drive containing invaluable data. Hutton accompanies Lennox to address some lingering "unresolved matters." With the Subsea Module temporarily incapacitated, the remainder of the crew finds themselves stranded in the loading dock.
In a dramatic turn of events, Bremner brandishes a gun and holds Harish hostage, negotiating with the rest of the group. In the ensuing struggle to thwart his plans, Rose is tragically shot in the stomach. Bremner escapes with the data drive, leaving the others in a state of disbelief and sorrow as it seems Rose has succumbed to her injuries.
