The opening scene of Episode 11 in Season 2 of "The Sandman" finds the inhabitants of the Dreaming deeply mourning the loss of Morpheus. Daniel, their new Dream, struggles to gain their acceptance, though Corinthian 2.0 shows empathy, recognizing fragments of Morpheus within him. Cain, insistent, demands Daniel's assistance to revive Abel, to which Daniel, while reminding Cain of his place, complies effortlessly. Seeking guidance, Daniel turns to Lucienne, aware that his presence is not required at Morpheus' funeral. Lucienne, apologetic, suggests another mentor, revealing her own reluctance to remain without Morpheus. She departs to greet the arriving guests, amongst them Johanna, Alex, and Hob. Hob, unable to come to terms with Morpheus' demise, finds comfort in Lucienne, who also refuses to acknowledge Daniel as her Dream.
Corinthian seeks out Johanna, who would prefer to discuss Morpheus rather than him. He confides that he is different now, a reflection of the changed Morpheus who recreated him. Isolated and seeking solace, he turns to her for comfort. She subtly hints at potential feelings between them but warns that these could shift, perhaps for the worse. Nearby, Rose is visibly distressed upon spotting Corinthian, and his lack of reassurance only exacerbates her fears, a detail not lost on Johanna. Hettie inquiries if Rose has a companion for the occasion, to which she replies no.
Nuala is plagued by the fear that the fae might compel her to return to her former life. Cluracan, though saddened, reassures her that the Dreaming is now her sanctuary. Among the gathering, other notable figures include Titania, Calliope, Puck, Lord Susan-O, and Nada, each contributing to the somber ambiance.
Elsewhere, Daniel painstakingly reconstructs Merv and Gilbert, harboring the earnest hope of finding mentorship within their ranks. However, Merv proves to be a font of limited knowledge, while Gilbert, mindful of the precious sacrifices made, requests to be obliterated once more. He vows to Daniel that his existence as a Dream will be purposeful, ensuring no one's gift is squandered.
The Endless arrive for the solemn ceremony, with Destruction notably absent—yet again, save for his clandestine presence beside Daniel. The nascent Dream, who now "recalls" Destruction, seeks his counsel, confessing his inexperience and unreadiness for the task ahead. Destruction, confiding in him, reveals that the Endless possess omnipotence by virtue of their very essence, reassuring him that enlightenment will come in due course.
The funeral's tranquility is disrupted by Lyta's urgent quest for Daniel. Rose, with gentle persuasion, soothes her and keeps her company. Each Endless, in turn, delivers a heartfelt eulogy, expressing their longing for a deeper bond with Morpheus and their joy at witnessing his transformation. Lucienne, speaking on behalf of all subjects, underscores how Morpheus is an inseparable part of everyone's dreams and aspirations.
Before his departure, Destruction bestows upon Daniel a coin, symbolizing the Dream King's authority over both the Dreaming realm and reality. Daniel, recognizing the weight of his new role, chooses to remain despite the formidable challenges, echoing Morpheus's resolve.
Death concludes the funeral by urging everyone to perpetuate stories of dreams, ensuring Morpheus's memory lives on. Following the ceremony, she visits Hob, pondering if he is prepared to relinquish his eternity. Though he has witnessed countless wonders, Hob believes there is still more to experience. He seeks affirmation that it is permissible to truly embrace eternity, to which she grants a resounding yes.
