Episode 4 of "The Winning Try" resumes precisely where our intrigue left off, with Ga-ram's dramatic entrance at the opening ceremony, accompanied by the new recruit. The vice principal, poised to nullify Ga-ram's triumph, reveals a twist in the school's admission process mandated by the Department of Education. Now, Ung faces a heightened challenge: to compete across three diverse disciplines—rugby, fencing, and archery—and secure victories in at least two, with the victorious disciplines dictating his eventual athletic path. Interested coaches may then request his participation in their respective sports.
Principal Kang attempts to object, recalling the hardship in enrolling students after a similar change five years prior, but the vice principal counters with Ga-ram's presence as proof of feasibility. Jong-man cites alarming statistics on the underwhelming success rates of students from physical education schools, planting seeds of doubt in Principal Kang's utopian vision for the institution. However, Ga-ram counters by emphasizing that students choose PE schools out of passion, and supporting their choices is paramount.
The rugby team springs into action, determined to whip Ung into shape for his unfamiliar challenges in fencing and archery. With time of the essence, Ga-ram resorts to subtle espionage, scoping out rival teams to gain a strategic edge.
Elsewhere, Jong-man and Nak-gyun's machinations continue, this time focusing on recruiting I-ji to their cause. Jong-man presents I-ji with a preemptively signed three-year contract, sweetening the deal with the promise of a permanent coaching position once he assumes the principalship. The catch? She must keep a close watch on Ga-ram.
The training sessions have been far from promising, particularly in the realm of archery. Desperate for improvement, Seong-jun resorts to a personal favor, pleading with Woo-jin, a former archery prodigy and a long-time acquaintance, to mentor Ung. After Seong-jun's heartfelt, kneeling entreaty, Woo-jin reluctantly agrees to guide Ung through the fundamentals. As Woo-jin and Ung grow closer during these intensive sessions, Seong-jun can't help but feel a pang of jealousy, an emotion keenly observed by Ga-ram.
Prior to this, Ga-ram had been assigned the covert task of trailing I-ji to prevent her from returning to school, thereby facilitating the rugby team's unauthorized use of the archery field for practice. In Seok-bong's restaurant, Ga-ram eavesdrops on I-ji's bitter tirade against her life's disruption at his hands. She reveals that news of Ga-ram's doping scandal interrupted her poise just as she was about to audition for the national shooting team. Her distraction led to a missed opportunity, and now, entangled in his affairs, she finds herself constantly sidetracked.
The day of the tryouts dawns. Rugby kicks off the events, with the team covertly planning to ease Ung to victory. However, Ung stuns everyone, especially Seong-jun, with his innate athleticism and raw talent. In fencing, though he emerges victorious only in spirit, scoring a solitary point, he demonstrates an impressive ability to anticipate and adapt to his opponent's moves.
The final event was slated for archery, but Vice Principal Jong-man, ever scheming, throws a wrench into the plans. Conveniently, all archery club members suffer from food poisoning, prompting a last-minute switch to shooting. Jong-man, having received a tip about the clandestine training sessions, orchestrates this switch to a more technically demanding discipline, making it abundantly clear that he intends to thwart the rugby team's triumph.
With suspicion clouding his mind, Seong-jun confronts Woo-jin, accusing her of being the one who betrayed their trust and informed Jong-man. Woo-jin remains enigmatic, neither acknowledging nor refuting his allegations. Seong-jun, desperate to sway her, pleads with her to throw in the towel since she is set to face Ung in competition. Unmoved, she reveals her true colors, asserting that she has no stake in preserving the rugby team's existence as her club stands to be elevated once they're gone.
It transpires that Jong-man had a contingency plan all along: to pit Ung against a shooting competition. Even Seol-hyun's father, Gyu-won, arrives to witness the spectacle. Prior to the shootout, Woo-jin overhead Ga-ram reassuring Ung that losing was an acceptable outcome. When Ung's turn arrives, he manages only a meager seven points, much to the amusement of the spectating crowd who jeered and laughed. In stark contrast, his rugby teammates offered unwavering support, embracing him warmly despite his subpar performance.
The writing was on the wall for Ung's defeat; Woo-jin could easily outscore him with a single shot. Yet, to everyone's astonishment, Woo-jin deliberately misses all her shots, leaving the audience bewildered. She congratulates Ung on his admission and exits the shooting range with a spring in her step. Ga-ram chases after her, querying her rationale behind such a move. Woo-jin, puzzled, counters by asking why he would counsel his athlete to embrace defeat. Ga-ram defends his stance, insisting that losing is a natural part of sports. Woo-jin, however, remains baffled by her own actions and those of her coach.
Gyu-won finds himself in a pickle, having manipulated the Department of Education to make Ung's admission a herculean task. Jong-man, ever scheming, suggests more underhanded tactics to dismantle the rugby team, but Gyu-won halts him. Frustrated by Ga-ram's interference, they shift their focus to ensuring the team fails to triumph in the upcoming tournament. Should they falter this semester, the team will face a recruitment crisis next semester, ultimately leading to its dissolution. Frustrated, Jong-man takes out his anger on I-ji by rescinding her three-year contract.
Wednesday emerges victorious in the duel but fails to acquire Goody's book. Soon after, the police arrive to take Ron's lifeless body and Slurp into custody. Pugsley is heartbroken to see Slurp being transported away in a Willow Hill van. Wednesday ponders on nature's cruel rule of survival of the fittest as she schemes a new plan to rescue Enid.
