Anna's explanations fall on indifferent ears, but the police refrain from charging her with a false report, instead urging her to apologize to Neil the following day. Determined to prove her theory, Anna marches to Neil's house the next morning and stumbles upon text messages exchanged between him and Lisa, timed precisely at 9:48 pm—a time after Lisa was supposed to have left. This discovery adds credence to Anna's suspicions. Neil attempts to explain away the police visit as a fright for Emma and dissuades Anna from further snooping.

Undeterred, Anna breaks into Neil's house and finds Lisa's earring near the window. Tragically, she is caught in the act by Neil and Emma, who have returned home. Realizing she needs assistance, Anna decides to embark on a weekend "grief retreat."

At the airport, Anna spots an advertisement for Olympia Airlines preparing for a westward flight. This revelation is problematic since Lisa works for Olympia, and if they're not flying to Seattle, it casts doubt on her alibi. Urged by this discovery, Anna rushes to the police station and attempts to explain the situation to Detective Lane. Intriguingly, Lane was once involved in the Massacre Mike case and shows empathy for Anna's plight. Moreover, it transpires that Mike murdered and consumed Anna's daughter, the source of her profound grief and trauma.

Moved by Anna's plight, Lane advises her to return home. However, as Anna steps outside the station, she notices a chilling message scribbled on her car: "Stop or you're next." This haunting warning ignites Anna's resolve to intensify her investigations. Utilizing Douglas' contacts, Anna poses as his assistant and commissions background checks on Lisa and Rex. She also delves deeper into Neil's involvement with Meredith Colman's death, which occurred at the lake house. Could Neil have murdered Lisa and Meredith as well? The mystery deepens.
