Published: Jun 03 2024

Episode 10 of "Them" kicks off with Betty, trapped within the confines of the underground bunker. With determination in her eyes, she ascends the stairs and discovers a startling revelation - the hatch is unlocked, inviting her freedom. But has it been this way all along? Betty doesn't linger to puzzle over the mystery.

Without hesitation, she emerges from the confinement and flees from George's farmhouse, never glancing back. Her frantic sprint across the countryside, cows grazing peacefully by, comes to a tragic end as George's sniper rifle rings out. A bullet finds its mark, and Betty collapses in a heap on the ground, her life extinguished.

Meanwhile, Lucky is orchestrating her own escape. She outwits the orderly at the institute, stabbing him with a syringe and slipping out of the room. Her cunning extends to the staff as well, leaving the therapist slumped and bloody on the floor after a series of expertly filmed scenes. The security guard, notably also of African descent, allows her to depart unharmed.

Back at home, Ruby brandishes an axe, bringing an abrupt end to Earl's life. She watches him crumple to the ground, a heap of lifeless flesh. Henry, coughing and sputtering, ventures out and shoots Marty in the leg. The altercation spills into the street, with Henry kicking Marty in the stomach. The commotion attracts the attention of the entire neighborhood, who watch silently as the drama unfolds.

Henry holds Marty at gunpoint, his wife arriving on the scene to call him a derogatory term. As she speaks, Henry raises his gun, poised to shoot the pregnant woman. Fortunately, Gracie and Ruby arrive at the scene, their presence enough to snap Henry out of his enraged state.

Inside the house, Ruby confronts Doris at school, a series of rotating camera shots capturing the tense encounter. Doris antagonizes Ruby, urging her to look in the mirror. When she does, a distorted reflection of Lucky stares back, a haunting reminder of the chaos and violence that surrounds them all.

A rejuvenated Henry strides resolutely back into the house, steeling himself to confront the menacing Tap Dance man. It transpires that Henry's troubles stem from the guilt he carries over that fateful night in North Carolina. His premature departure had unwittingly paved the way for the crooks to descend upon his home, paving the tragic path to his son's demise as Vera and her cohorts made their appearance.

Lucky returns to the neighborhood with a vengeance, navigating through a swarm of inquisitive individuals who crowd around her, clamoring for information about Betty's whereabouts and pleading with her to restore the woman to their midst. Amidst the commotion, Lucky shouts for them to desist as a mysterious and inexplicable wall of flame suddenly erupts before the Emory residence. She rushes back inside, finding Gracie in the clutches of the sinister Mrs. Vera. Gracie, realizing the danger she's in, snatches her book and rips out its pages, an act that seems to vanquish the apparition.

Next, Lucky and Gracie track down Ruby in the bathroom, jolting her out of her trance. Lucky assures her daughter of her unwavering love and brings her back to reality. However, Henry remains ensnared by the Tap Dance man, who whispers seductively, urging him to embrace the beast within and retaliate against those who oppress him.

With a gun in his grasp, Henry prepares to strike. But just then, Lucky appears and kisses her husband, sharing his sorrow and gently pulling him back from the brink of violence. Henry summons his strength and dispatches the Tap Dance man, leaving him sprawled on the floor.

As flames still rage outside, Henry leads his family outdoors, ready to face whatever challenges await. They are no longer running. Before joining them, Lucky descends to the basement, confronting Epps and his henchmen. He reveals his twisted motive of preserving the community's purity, explaining why her family has been targeted. Stepping aside, he reveals her deceased child, alive and well in a crib.

As Lucky cradles the baby, Epps mutters darkly. But this is all an illusion, as Lucky retaliates, declaring that she sees him clearly. She grabs a cross and throws it to the ground, invoking the devil's own promise to haunt Epps. Forced to confront his demons, Epps's fate is sealed as he is consumed by the flames.

As Day 10 dawns, the family stands united in front of the dwindling flames. The blaze gradually fades and dies out, as three police officers arrive, guns trained on them. As the episode draws to a close, the family stands resolute, facing whatever lies ahead, while the rest of the world watches on in silence.
