Them – Season 1 Episode 6

Published: Jun 03 2024

Episode 6 of Them opens with a haunting scene of Lucky looming over Gracie in the dead of night, his hands clenched tightly around an axe. This, however, is merely a fragment of a dream, a recurrent theme that continues to plague the show. And yet, Them offers another dream sequence to tantalize us further.

Lucky's struggles are not alone in this nightmarish realm. Henry stares intently into the mirror, clutching a straight razor as he attempts to shave, his concentration wavering. Tragically, he ends up slicing his skin, spilling crimson blood into the sink. Meanwhile, Lucky, caught up in his own terrifying visions, accidentally scorches Gracie's neck, as if her hair is aflame.

As day 7 dawns, Henry bids farewell to the children at school and returns to work, only to encounter a chilly reception from Stu Berks. Berks is displeased with Henry's decision to bypass him and speak directly to the Director. In retaliation, Berks removes Henry from the Pentagon Project, stripping him of any potential bonuses that awaited him. Henry is furious, yet manages to restrain his anger for the moment.

Upon returning home, Henry's visions persist, this time in the form of a terrifying black-faced clown dubbed the Tap Dance Man. The clown stomps his feet and chants a mantra of "what you gunna do" in reference to Henry's predicament at work. This murderous chant spurs Henry into action, grabbing a gun and setting out in search of revenge.

With a single-minded purpose, Henry heads straight to Berks' house, only to encounter an innocent bystander who provokes him. In a fit of rage, Henry smacks the man with the butt of his gun, leaving him crumpled in a bloody heap on the ground.

Concurrently, Gracie's mind begins to play tricks on her at school, hallucinating Mrs. Vera's figure looming in the distance. Entranced, Gracie repeatedly murmurs, "cat in the bag." When Lucky learns of Gracie's ordeal, she's immediately horrified and rushes to pick up her daughter from school. However, the teacher's words are bleak, suggesting that Gracie might be better suited at another institution.

Meanwhile, Betty heads to the bank, expecting to withdraw some funds. But to her horror, she discovers that her account is nearly empty, save for a mere $400. The vast sum missing leaves Betty shaken and struggling to maintain her composure. It seems that Clarke has withdrawn the funds and vanished without a trace.

At school, Doris urges Gracie to descend to the basement where the other girls are practicing. But this turns out to be a mere illusion, revealed when the camera pans away from the choreographed dance to show Ruby alone.

Lucky returns home with Gracie, where a furious Betty lashes out, using a derogatory epithet. Enraged, Lucky loses her temper and slaps Betty hard across the face. I'm not sure about you, but I found that moment deeply satisfying!

Betty's anger reaches a boiling point as she grabs a knife in the kitchen, ripping off wallpaper while screaming her frustration to the heavens. But eventually, she regains her composure, picking up the phone and pleading for a favor from the man on the other end of the line.
