Meanwhile, in the bustling metropolis of Constantinople, Zoe braves the confines of Harald's prison cell, where accusations fly like daggers. He accuses her of exploitation, yet she counters with the truth that their union was a mutual arrangement, devoid of genuine desire for matrimony. However, the scales of justice have shifted, with Maniakes entrusting the trial to the Church's mercy, leaving Zoe powerless to grant Harald absolution. Her apology hangs heavy in the air, but Harald acknowledges his own avarice as the architect of his downfall.

In Kattegat, a regal procession ushers in Canute, Emma, Harthacanute, Edward, and Alfred, their arrival tinged with momentous purpose. Emma, in a moment of solitude, confides in Queen Aelfgifu, whispering of Canute's meticulous succession plans and his ardent wish to avert bloodshed, his health faltering. As Canute and his progeny grace the Great Hall, he introduces Aelfgifu with a reverence that melts her heart.

Far-flung in Greenland, Erik's men seize a vessel for trade with brute force, while Freydis, unaware, ventures out for a fishing expedition with him. Soon after, the Greenlanders strike again, this time stealing vital supplies from the Jomsvikings. Gathered in council, Erik attempts to sway the Jomsvikings' loyalty with cunning words, but Freydis, resolute, declares her intention to depart. Erik's fury boils over as a significant portion of the Greenlanders accept her invitation to join her ranks, leaving behind only a fraction of supplies as a token of filial piety to their shared motherland.

Back in Constantinople, General Maniakes weaves a web of intrigue, seeking to implicate Zoe and the Varangians in his machinations. He presses for their trial, accusing them of concealing Zoe's affair with Harald from Romanos, and escalates the situation by subjecting Dorn to brutal torture. To safeguard those she holds dear, Harald makes a desperate confession, claiming to have forcibly taken Zoe and slain Romanos in a fit of rage. This act seals his fate, as he's sentenced to a public execution and dragged to the dungeons. Along the way, a grim revelation shatters his already shattered spirit—Maniakes has mercilessly slain Dorn, Kaysan, and Batu. Consumed by fury, Harald vows vengeance against the General, his heart filled with a fire that will not be extinguished.

Meanwhile, Harefoot and Godwin's grand entrance into Kattegat stirs up a maelstrom of emotions. Aelfgifu's anger towards Godwin still simmers fiercely, fueled by his betrayal, yet he stands resolute, proclaiming his unwavering allegiance to those destined for victory. With Harefoot, her own son, as his chosen champion, Godwin cunningly posits that aligning with him is in her best interest, should she harbor dreams of seeing her flesh and blood ascend to the throne.

In a twist of fate, Leif too graces Kattegat's shores, stumbling upon Canute amidst the sprawling expanse where he had rallied a formidable army, bent on avenging the St. Brice's Day tragedy. Their reunion is tinged with camaraderie as Leif reveals his audacious plan to commandeer a vessel, his sights set on the unexplored West. In gratitude for Leif's steadfast companionship, Canute generously bestows upon him a ship and a crew, fit for a heroic voyage.

As for Canute's own musings, they linger on the conundrum of discerning which of his sons can transcend the shadows cast by his own formidable legacy.
