Washington Black – Season 1 Episode 3 1

After hearing Jack’s story, Angie comforts him while Medwin vows to protect him. Later, Angie tells Jack about John, the man Medwin couldn’t help. It turns out that John used to be the people’s protector. He was the one who took Medwin in and mentored him.

At the time, John didn’t drink and was committed to helping the Black community in Halifax. He was waiting for his family to join him there. Unfortunately, they were killed while trying to escape. Their deaths sent John to seek comfort in the bottle.

Within a short time, he turned into an alcoholic and relinquished his office to Medwin. John became a shell of the man he used to be. At one point, he stole funds from the office to get drinks. Medwin tried to help, but John was too far gone. After that, Medwin turned his back on John.

Meanwhile, Billard’s associates approach Mr Goff and Tanna at dinner. They threaten to out Tanna’s relationship with Jack. They also demand to know where Jack is, but Mr Goff sends them on their way. He scolds Tanna and warns her not to anger McGee. With their family going bankrupt after what happened in London, the marriage to McGee is their only hope. According to Mr Goff, the engagement is in print, and they can’t back out.

Jack's heart sank as he read the engagement announcement, wondering why Tanna had kept such news from him. In a fit of emotion, he tossed aside his meticulously crafted drawing of her and entrusted Angie with the task of burning it. However, Angie, ever the mediator, decided otherwise. She sought out Tanna, persuading her to confront Jack and clear the air between them. Her heartfelt wish was for the pair to finally be honest with one another. Instead of destroying the drawing, Angie left it with Tanna as a gesture of hope.

Tanna bravely entered the church and told Jack the truth about her marriage. Jack was also honest and revealed that he was being hunted. The two talked to each other and decided to let go of the past and start over. Even after learning about Jack's situation, Tanna still stood by him firmly and refused to give up easily.

That fateful night, John's deceit led Jack into a perilous trap. Billard and his accomplice approached, intending to seize Jack, oblivious to his innocence but perceiving him as a danger nonetheless. Fortunately, Medwin arrived just in time, dispatching Billard and his companions with swift precision. He sent Jack back to Angie's care, while he himself lingered to confront John, who was eagerly awaiting his reward.

After ensuring Jack's safe departure, Medwin extended a brief apology to John before ending his life. Ironically, John, in his final moments, thanked Medwin for reuniting him with his family, perhaps in a twisted sense of acceptance or surreal humor amidst the grim circumstances.
