Episode 3 of "We Were the Lucky Ones" unfolds with the dramatic arrest of Genec, a moment abruptly interrupted by Herta's urgent plea to accompany him, arguing that her safety would be no less jeopardized without him. Meanwhile, across vast waters, Addy finds himself serenely aboard a ship bound for Brazil, his fingers dancing across the piano keys to entertain the first-class passengers. His gaze drifts to a vision of loveliness—Elizabeth, or Eliszy as she is known, accompanied by her mother, wealthy refugees from Prague. An instant spark ignites between Addy and Eliszy, their hearts captivated by each other's presence.
As night descends, Eliszy joins Addy, and together they gaze at the emerging dawn sky, only to realize with a shock that their ship has veered off course, heading in the opposite direction.
Elsewhere, Genec and Herta find themselves crammed among other Jews and prisoners in a squalid train carriage, enduring three grueling weeks before being dispatched to a Siberian prison camp where they must labor for sustenance.
In Lvov, Halina toils as a lab assistant under a Soviet professor, her hands dipping into theft once again, this time securing an egg and lactic acid—valuables that Adam can trade for fake IDs. Yet, her actions draw rebuke, as she risks jeopardizing her prestigious job at the research institute, a position of immense significance to the Underground.
Meanwhile, Addy and Eliszy's ship finds itself stranded in Dakar, Senegal, a French colony tinged with antisemitism, for nearly a month. While Addy and Eliszy are permitted to disembark, the others remain confined. Addy confronts the captain over the deplorable conditions in steerage, but his efforts fall on deaf ears. Furthermore, the ship's ultimate destination is Casablanca, Morocco, another antisemitic French colony. Eliszy confronts Addy with the harsh reality that Brazil is no longer their destination, and the two, driven by an unspoken understanding, share a tender night together.
Genec and Herta endure arduous labor within the harsh confines of a Soviet prison. Tragedy strikes when one of their comrades contracts gangrene, necessitating a desperate measure: Genec must amputate his friend's finger. Through the long, arduous night, he battles with the task, while Herta and Genec contemplation who will assist in the impending birth of their child, now that the sole pharmacist is disabled. However, upon dawn's break, they discover the pharmacist's lifeless body, a grim reminder of their dire circumstances.
Deeply perturbed by this grim discovery, Genec seeks solace and reason with the Soviet commander, appealing to the laws governing medical assistance. Yet, his pleas fall on deaf ears, and he is instead punished for his absence from work, with a harrowing 30% deduction from his weekly ration. Meanwhile, Herta manages to deliver their baby safely, a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.
Back in Lvov, Halina has forged a heartfelt connection with the Doctor. They share stories of their respective families, and Halina opens up to him about Genec's mysterious disappearance, a burden she carries alone.
On the ship, the travelers receive a partial reimbursement of 70% and are instructed to disembark at Casablanca, an unexpected twist in their journey. Amidst the confusion, Addy is separated from Eliszy, their bond tested by fate.
Halina, balancing the precarious line between work and theft, finds herself unexpectedly apprehended by the Soviets, right under the Doctor's watchful eye. Her world spirals further into uncertainty and peril.
